Back when my colleague and I were in Ipin with Volodymyr and Yaroslav. Two of the soldiers who helped liberate Irpin and Bucha from the Russians on 1 April. It was great to meet the two guys but really sad to see all the destruction.

CHERNIHIV, UKRAINE: The city of Chernihiv, was hit hard by the Russian invasion. The Mayor of Chernihiv, Vladyslav Atroshenko, has said that around 700 people (including soldiers) have been killed by the Russians during the siege of the city. Chernihiv is very close to the border with Belarus and though the Russian troops are gone now many people in the city fear that the Russians are only regrouping and will attack again.

UKRAINE: Seven-year-old Arina was afraid when the Russians bombed Bucha. It wasn't the sounds that scared the little girl no it was the pressure waves that were the worst she said. With the Russians gone, she can now ride her bicycle through the debris of the Russian tanks and combat vehicles left on Vokzalna Street in Bucha.

Borodyanka, Ukraine: Several housing blocks were destroyed by Russian airstrikes in the small city of Borodyanka close to Kyiv during the initial phase of the Russian invasion. Now after having been liberated the rescue workers struggle to salvage the dead from beneath the rubble while the survivors return to save what's left of their belongings.
As of yesterday, 26 bodies had been pulled from the rubble. The acting mayor of Borodyanka, Georgii Yerko, has said that they fear that as many as 200 people ly buried beneath the buildings and this morning Ukrainian president called the tragedy worse than what happened in Bucha.

Przemysl, Poland: On our way back to Kyiv yesterday we had a stop in the Polish town of Przemysl. Here some Ukrainian refugees have now begun to return to their homes in the liberated areas around Kyiv.
In picture 1 we have Sophia and her son, two-year-old Aron, who are on their way back to Irpin. In picture 3 we have eight-year-old Anastasia and her cat Busia and in picture 4 we have twelve-year-old Polina and her mother Svetlana.
I hope you've made it back safely.

Again and again, during this ridiculous war, I'm lost for words. So many lost lives so many tragedies. May it all soon come to an end.

I’ve finished my Instagram takeover on Photojournalism Hub with a photo of eight-year-old Ostap at the checkpoint at the entrance to his village. The schools are closed because of the war so he passes the time playing with his kick scooter and watching the village men guard the entrance. This was the last story I worked on in Ukraine before we pulled back to Poland about a week ago. I really want to say thanks to all the people that helped my colleague and me while we were in Ukraine. Without you, our work would never have been possible. And then I just want to thank Photojournalism Hub] for the opportunity to post my images to all of you and to help put focus on the situation in the country. Finally, I want to thank all of you who care about the fate of the people of Ukraine. Thank you.

While the Russian bombs have struck many parts of Ukraine with devastating and deadly effects there are still parts of the country not directly affected by the war. Ukraine’s largest western city Lviv is one of those areas that for now has only felt the indirect consequences of the war. The city is filled with thousands of displaced Ukrainians, schools and educational facilities are closed as are a lot of the city’s businesses. Here many Ukrainians spend their time preparing for the war by making things that can support their Ukrainian soldiers fighting at the frontlines. In today's post, you see a large group of volunteers working on making camouflage nets out of old football or fishing nets and old clothes.
18-year-old Sofia (in yellow) is one of the volunteers that have chosen to stay in Ukraine and support the war effort as best she can. She hopes the soldiers will notice their work and know that they all support them and are thinking about them.

I’m doing an Instagram takeover on where I’ll be sharing some of my recent work from Ukraine.
The first image I’ve posted is from the Shehyni border crossing at the Ukrainian/Polish border. Yesterday the UN announced that over three million people had now fled Ukraine. A completely staggering number and it’s only a week ago that the UN estimated the number to be 1.45 million.

Ukraine 22: I really wanted to write something profound to this photo but I can't think of any words that are stronger than the eyes of Nikita. The boy and his mother were some of the "lucky" displaced Ukrainians who made it onto one of yesterday's trains to Poland.

Ukraine 22: Like so many other evenings here in Lviv we once again found ourselves in a make-shift bomb shelter when I had a chat with these brave ladies from Kyiv.
Ludmila, Alona, Tetiana and Evgenia.
Understandably clearly shaken by the situation Alona could not understand why Russia could do this to her country. "Us Ukrainians have always minded our own business and have never done anything to Russia. How can Putin do this to us?", she said.
Tetiana was also very shocked by the Russian aggression. "Ukraine is our country. How dare they come here and attack us. I'm very angry".
While Alona still does not know what the future holds for her Tetiana has made up her mind. "I will never leave Ukraine. I will volunteer to make Molotov cocktails so we can attack the Russian tanks when they come".

Ukraine 22: A lot of s**t happened yesterday where two of my colleagues got shot while covering the war in Ukraine. One of them very badly. Fortunately, they are both gonna make it.
While all that happened I was at the opposite side of the country trying to document the many Ukrainians trying to get out of the country to safety in other European countries.
Here is a snapshot of the images from yesterday. Be safe everyone.

Back at the hotel after a day in the field where everything went wrong. Two traffic violations, one speeding ticket, no stories worked out, everything took three times longer than expected and our car broke down four hours drive from the nearest tow truck.
And I haven’t even gotten to the political situation yet.
Good night Ukraine and good luck.

While I was away on assignment in Norway the held a screening of the Danish POY exhibition projected onto a facade here in Copenhagen. It really looks like an amazing event and I wish I could have been there to see all my colleagues winning photos and of course my own portrait here displayed on the wall.

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY 2015: During the early stages of the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 thousands of people had sought shelter inside the Keleti train station in Budapest while waiting for a chance to get on a train north. Many of the men, women, and children were forced to stay on the street when the Hungarian police shut down all trains to other European countries. The police allegedly evacuated the station building in order to regain control of the situation inside. Most of the refugees wanted to go to either Austria or Germany and had already bought tickets but were still refused access to the station. They in turn refused to leave the areas outside the building until they were guaranteed a spot on a train or got their money back.

Thanks again, Mwajuma. Take care.

I'm extremely honored to have won the award for best portrait at the Danish Photo of the Year. This really means a lot to me. Thank you to for hosting the event and to for giving me the chance to work on interesting and important stories. I'm very grateful. And last but definitely not least a big congratulations to all of my colleagues who won today. You guys are a great inspiration.

Portrait caption:
At 9.14 in the morning on 23 June Mwajuma sent a text to her son Phillip: ‘Where are you?’. He had been out partying, and now his mother couldn’t get a hold of him.
News about a body found in a forest early that morning worried Mwajuma, and in the afternoon a police officer brought her the terrible news: Her son had been brutally murdered by two brothers.
Phillip had been severely abused, and according to the coroner, he had also been choked by having a knee pressed against his throat. This similarity with the murder of George Floyd combined with the fact, that Phillip was half Tanzanian, let many to believe, that the murder was racially motivated. The prosecutor later dismissed that.
