Arthur Lee started Love with grit, flowers and electric guitars - by the time "Forever Changes" came out, the electric fuzz went acoustic, but the core of it just got amplified.

In an interview Classic Rock: "The music in my head that I had in the back of my head [whistles high to low] – way in the back – I knew I could do the things that I saw The Byrds doing at Ciro’s [...] So, man, you know, I jumped on the wagon because when they left they left a huge following of people here. So I didn’t get my trip from The Byrds, but they was a big influence on the first Love album, you know what I mean? But see, I was hungry, man. I said: “I’ll go around and I’m gonna do this thing until I’m capable of doing my thing.”"

Vinyl of the Day: New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies (Factory, 1983)

Second album of the phoenix band New Order, born out of seventies following the death of Ian Curtis and de facto Joy Division, "Power, Corruption & Lies" is also the band's affirmation. While their first album, "Movement", was still anchored in post-punk, New Order was now finally departing towards what would define the rest of the decade: synth-pop.

Album of the Day: Arcade Fire - Funeral (Merge, 2004)

The band that I have seen the most times in my life; maybe because I was the right generation, or just maybe because Arcade Fire was the most significant rock band of the 2000s. Discovering the force and the fury of "Funeral" in 2004, when the Canadian band wasn't yet a stadium crowder, was mesmerizing in a way that have yet to be equaled since. Again maybe I was the prime audience. Maybe they were also just that good.

Starting this new series of posts highlighting my go-to spots to buy my own vinyls in Denmark, and mainly in Copenhagen where I live.

The obvious one being the go-to place BEAT København V in the V, both edgy and mainstream, it's just one of the most complete record store around. You'll find all vinyls as well as merch, books and a cafe with some showcases around the year.

"Sensational", the second album by Erika de Casier is without a doubt one of the best danish albums of recent years, as well as one of the main pop R&B drops of 2021 - and part of monthly box this December 🎁.

Behind the slick post-Y2K sound of Erika de Casier, is her long-time collaborator Natal Zaks who is part of the collective Regelbau from Aarhus.

It's a group of producers and DJs who have for some years played with retro-modern works based on breakbeat, UK 2-step garage and techno.

Album of the Day: Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks (Columbia, 1975)

"Blood on the Tracks" marks the return of Dylan on the critics table, after half a decade in the seventies where his newer albums were arguably of variable quality. For those that hailed Dylan as a sixties figure, its fifteenth (!) album unveils its relevance in the general history of music. "Tangled Up In Blue", what an opening still.

Even the loudest voices against the controversial persona of Gainsbourg can't take away the masterpiece that is Melody Nelson. The legendary concept-album, half spoken, half magnificent, is inspired by Nabokov's "Lo**ta" and is revered by all modern pop goldsmiths around the world, and celebrates the pinnacle of the collaboration of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier. Influential and essential.

In the summer of 2021, Efterklang went on a week-long residency on the island of Møn - where they recorded their latest album "Windflowers". During that residency called "Sommertræf", the band and guests musicians recorded a session including old and new materials.

Album of the Day: Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (V2 Records , 2009)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Under this very pompous and pastiche album name, the fourth album of the french band Phoenix has proven to be the most accomplished of their careers. When the previous ones were dashing and youth-fueled, "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" showed a matured sound for Phoenix, more varied, and seeming to take its time. "Lisztomania" as an opening being one of the defining moment of the late 2000s.

Did you know Art Blakey came and play with his Jazz Messengers several time at Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen during his lengthy career.

This includes a concert in 1988, just two years before his passing away, from where this great picture comes from.

Album of the Day: Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (Columbia, 1959)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What else really haven't been said about "Kind of Blue"? It's been thrown around so many "all-times best" lists, and dissected for decades, that we tend to forget that it's not an easy introduction for jazz - or music in general - the same way that "Citizen Kane" can be quite opaque for anyone discovering it for the first time. It's a savoury and sensory journey that has become a rite of passage. You get it or not, but you can never feel indifferent.

Efterklang wrote and produced their latest album, "Windflowers", while isolating on the island of Møn, surrounded with nature and finding themselves again as a band.

"We spent a lot of time working out in the countryside in Møn, and you're closer to nature. We were there in all seasons, beautiful summertime, but we were also there during a blizzard, stuck in the snow. You feel the elements much more when you're not in a city. It's good to be reminded that we are all a part of nature. And that nature is very cyclical. All these things that will come and go." (interview with The Line Of Best Fit.

Album of the Day: Gang Of Four - Entertainment! (EMI, 1979)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1979 was a cornerstone year for music across genres: Chic's "Risqué", Motörhead's "Overkill", Supertramp's "Breakfast in America", Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures"... and of course Gang Of Four's "Entertainment!". The debut album of the band from Leeds incorporated punk, funk and dance to their groundbreaking multi-headed rock. The whole wave of revival rock (The Strokes, Interpol) from the early 2000s have had a lot to learn from Gang of Four.

Album of the Day: Neneh Cherry - Raw Like Sushi (Virgin Records, 1989)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Buffalo Stance" that is opening the debut album of Neneh Cherry is one of these songs you knew was absolutely different from what you've heard before. It had rap attitude, synths clothes and new age spirits; but on the forefront on all tracks. Neneh Cherry was inspired by the punk scene, shaping her persona with the Slits or X-Ray Spex. "Raw Like Sushi" has grit and coolness at a time where you couldn't be both.⠀

Art Blakey lived for the stage and the performance, using his Jazz Messengers as an academy for young jazz players to accompany him for more than 40 years.

"If you feel like tapping your feet, tap your feet. If you feel like clapping your hands, clap your hands. And if you feel like taking off your shoes, take off your shoes. We are here to have a ball. So we want you to leave your worldly troubles outside and come in here and swing."

Album of the Day: Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (Columbia, 1963)⠀⠀⠀⠀

There was a time when Dylan was still just a promising new singer-songwriter performing in The Village and who released a debut album which featured mainly were covers. With "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", the instant zeitgeist of the sixties materialized through the persona of this hippie, litterate entertainer, who made all the previous folk singers figures of the past. There are a few cornerstones in modern music - opening on "Blowin' In The Wind" is a definite one.

We talked with our artist of the month, Nana Jacobi, singer-songwriter and co-founder of HUN SOLO. We asked Nana about her thoughts about vinyls, the music she grew up with and her future plans with Hun Solo.

"The love for the album is relevant here: you enter to the whole vision of the artist – the whole piece of art, by listening to albums, instead of singles. And then on top of that, you get that lovely, cool vinyl-sound. You will get a listening experience, that is so much more rich and full, in all matters."

We talked with our very first member, Carina, and American artist living in Copenhagen, and asked her about how she got into vinyls, what music she listens to, and what does the LP experience brings to her discovering new music.

"During quarantine, as we just got the record player, all I could think of was that one of those record companies could go bankrupt. So I made a list of all our local record stores and I looked at all of their stuff in their inventory, and I just bought a couple of albums from each place."

Did you know. that In 1967, Stax Records had to face the loss of their main artist, Otis Redding who died in an airplane accident; and the year after, they lost the distribution deal with the Atlantic Records.

What do you do if you are Al Bell, newly co-owner of Stax, when most of your catalog has now disappeared? You work harder and give your chance to new artists and release 27 albums in a year. One of those album being “Hot Buttered Soul” by the then-producer Isaac Hayes who was given carte blanche on the creative control. The rest is history.
