I paid Lundgaard Studios a visit this weekend to learn about their approach to mastering and to see their facilities. It was a great learning experience that showed me, once again, that there’s always something to learn in this field once you go down the rabbit hole.

We talked about analog/digital workflows, loudness, specific mastering techniques, the evolution of the industry and the mastering engineer’s role through the last 40 years.
I definitely learned that there are some refinements I can make in my setup and the way I approach things in my studio.

Lundgaard Studios is a real gem. It’s an important pillar of danish music legacy and multiple mayor artists have recorded here through the last 30 years. And understandably so, it’s a beautiful and quiet place in the country side - just a great place to be creative and work on your music.

It was a great visit with hospitable, knowledgeable and passionate people. Hope to come back some day soon

Case Study - Poison Ivy EP 💿

A while back I had the pleasure of mastering the debut ep from Poison Ivy- A side project of composer, producer and DJ, Merry Jane Music. The artist wanted a loud and punchy master that would translate well on streaming platforms as well as the club environment, when performing live.

My typical approach:

1️⃣ We start by having a conversation about the sound, the clients artistic references and I source information about the tracks using my detailed Client Pre-Mastering Form. This way we find a good common understanding on how to reach the artistic vision.

2️⃣ When I am provided with the mix files I QC and analyze the metrics with my Pre Mastering Form (as shown in a previous post)

These steps provide me with the necessary tools to set up my gear and mindset to achieve a good, reliable result every time.

3️⃣ I do the work and send it off to the client for first revision. In this example the client approved the master on first revision. She was very happy with the result. (If needed I do offer unlimited revisions).

4️⃣ When everything is in order I provide the following deliverables:
- -0dBTP_2448 (High Res Services)
- 320kbps_EPK (For Press Kits)
- 16441CD (CD Quality)
- 244441_Distro (For Your Distributars)

This is how I achieve a good and consistant result that all parties are happy with. Communication is key and sets the project up for success!

To improve my mastering workflow I made this “Pre Mastering Calculations”-pdf.

1. I use RX-Audio editor to listen, QC and analyse the waveforms stats of a given tune/.wav.
2. I input these observations + stats in the form and it makes calculations that helps me during mastering.
3. This helps me predict how my gear will react and what to do next, thus securing the best outcome in the end.

ℹ️ Under Ground Productions bliver til Bear Audio ℹ️

Lokalerne er opsagt og Under Ground Productions er nu et afsluttet kapitel. Det bliver nu til Bear Audio Mastering som bliver drevet videre af mig, Bjørn Sigvert. Bear Audio tilbyder professionel analog/digital mastering og mixing af lyd i alle afskygninger.

Jeg er super spændt og glæder mig til at dele hele processen med jer. Jeg har mange drømme og planer for det bette studie. Jeg håber I fortsat vil følge med.

One of my favorite tracks from the album is dropping this Sunday:
"THE ROAD"

Is one of those times you write and don't expect to share it with anyone. After we lost our home (in which we fell in love and started the whole process of going independent with the music and all) from one day to the other, i tried to keep myself together and not go into thoughts, worrying or pits. I put on a evidence beat, and just started writing off the top without stopping.

That was 3 years ago, realizing it fitted perfectly with a guitar jam i played around with, i took it to the guys at Under Ground Productions and asked for some help with proper bas and guitar. We teamed up and made a new beat, recorded the track last year and finally i'm able to share it.

It's a culmination of the whole time I had writing the tracks on the album, having a home in an eco village and finally feeling safe, practicing healthy habits and going inside for understanding, only to be out there again in survival mode, refusing to give in to hopelessness.

It'll see ya sunday and likewise :) Peace everyone

Nu er der kun 3 dage til at min EP ryger på gaden. "I Can't Wait" er titelnummeret på EP'en, der er skrevet til min datter, mens hun stadig lå inde i maven - Det er en hyldest til alle, der vil have børn, til alle som har børn og til familier i alle størrelser

Luna (Lunar) betyder måne på latinsk :D
