This room is strictly for classical music of any era (Early music through the Modern Era) and both instrumental and vocal works are welcome. Modern Era music can get pretty out there, and anything from Cage’s 4’33’’ to Reich’s “It’s Gonna Rain” to computer music is acceptable. Here is a list of the top 100 classical pieces if you’re interested in knowing what gets a lot of play time already:

Please respect what the moderators have to say whether they have actual mod powers at the moment or not. They are familiar with the rules and will fairly enforce them. Time limit per track: 25 minutes is basically our top limit. Yes that’s a long time, but it’s classical music; it tends to be long. If you have something longer and can get the majority of the other DJ’s to agree with your playing it, go for it! DJ Queue and DJ limits: If there is an open spot, please ask if it is spoken for before you jump up there, as there may be an agreed upon line in place already. Currently there is no limit on how long you can DJ for, but it’s in good taste to step down if you’ve been up there a while and others have stated that they would like to DJ as well. The following types of music ARE allowed here on top of your typical classical:
Movie and Game Music - This genre was banned in here before COAK without the Pop! It is allowed in here now, but with some limitation. Basically, try to keep these tracks to those that contain real instruments that need no amplification. That also means no midi instruments please. Don’t get offended if the audience finds your selection too non-classical...
The following types of music ARE NOT allowed here:
Instrumental covers of rock, pop, indie, new age, etc. - The fact that something is being played by an orchestra, piano, string quartet, or whatever typical classical grouping of instruments does not make it classical music. Similarly, having Pavarotti sing alongside Bono with U2 does not suddenly make that music classical either. Crossover - This one is a little bit more flexible, but basically if something has a back beat and your standard amplified instruments (electric guitar, electric bass, etc) then it’s not for this room. If you play off-genre music in this room, you will be either removed from the DJ stand or booted. Repeat offenders will be booted repeatedly, resulting in temporary bans as per Turntable.fm’s ban procedures. If you are being abusive verbally, you will be warned. If you continue to do so, you will be booted. Basically, please just keep it clean and in the realm of classical, and we’ll all have a good time!
