Julius Gabriel - Tales from the Subterranean

Born out of new sounds and rhythms that the musician discovered during the pandemic, “Tales From The Subterranean” embodies a blend of primal energy and inventive exploration across twelve tracks. It invites you to move. Merging saxophone finger percussion with a continuous siren whisper emanating from the instrument, provoking euphoria, fear and satisfaction all at once. Slowly you start to understand the sense of discovery behind the record and the needs Julius had, like to construct a saxophone with drone capabilities and closer to an idea of natural sound. “Tales from the Subterranean“ stands as a testament to the resilience of artistic expression. It is primal music.

𝙏𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙎 𝙁𝙍𝙊𝙈 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙎𝙐𝘽𝙏𝙀𝙍𝙍𝘼𝙉𝙀𝘼𝙉 is a collaboration between Lovers & Lollypops and Ana Ott. Recorded and mixed by Rabih Beaini at Morphine Raum, mastered by Rashad Becker at Clunk Studio. The artwork was created by Simon Mellnich.

"𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀" is the debut single from Julius Gabriels new album 𝙏𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙎 𝙁𝙍𝙊𝙈 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙎𝙐𝘽𝙏𝙀𝙍𝙍𝘼𝙉𝙀𝘼𝙉. This record brings together influences from percussion music and melodic modes around the globe. Immersing itself in the nuances of two unique saxophones through techniques, rhythms, and melodies explored in isolation, a vibrant interplay emerges, connecting the realms of corporeality, acoustics, transcendence, and hypnosis.

The Duo Ludwig Wittbrodt, that‘s Emily Wittbrodt on cello and Edis Ludwig on laptop and drums. The two develop a thicket of sounds and melodies that absorbs us in a completely unpretentious way and fills us with associations and warmth. We are reminded of the achievements of both Krautrock and Neue Musik, of early electronic music as well as Drone and Ambient.

At first glance, Emily and Edis seem to be an unequal couple. She has an academic background as a cellist, he is self-taught with his main instrument being computer and programming. She is active in Free Jazz, he drums with the rock band Düsseldorf Düsterboys. On the other hand, both have been active in the Free Improv scene in the german Rhine-Ruhr region for years - for example in ensembles such as The Dorf or Hilde (Emily) and Nasssau or Transport (Edis). This is the duo‘s second album.
