⭐️Breaking News! Congratulations to Isaac Hernández who will join American Ballet Theatre as a Guest Artist during the 2024 Fall season at the David H. Koch Theater. After this introductory season, he will join the Company as a full time Principal Dancer in January 2025. Hernández’s engagement was announced today by Artistic Director Susan Jaffe.
Hernández will be American Ballet Theatre’s first Mexican Principal Dancer.

Shale Wagman goes to Paris. Congratulations!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Shale Wagman, soloist with the Bayerisches Staatsballett, is making a surprise move to the ballet of the Opéra National de Paris. He earned a place as a quadrille, or corps de ballet dancer, in the Concours externe, the annual competition for dancers who do not come from the company’s own academy. The charismatic Canadian trained in Toronto and at the Académie Princesse Grace in Monte-Carlo. He has won numerous prizes, including the Prix de Lausanne 2018 and the Youth American Grand Prix 2014. Wagman was the youngest guest ever to appear in a leading role at the Mariinsky, as James in “La Sylphide”. He danced with the English National Ballet from 2019 to 2021, when Igor Zelensky brought him to Munich. He was promoted to soloist in the 2022/23 season. Alexei Ratmansky choreographed a leading role for him in his “Tchaikovsky Overtures”, Wagman was also in numerous other creations. He also danced Mercutio in John Cranko’s “Romeo and Juliet”, the Mad Hatter in Christopher Wheeldon’s “Alice” and the Golden Idol in “La Bayadère”.

Dr. Ralf Stabel returns to work at the Berlin State Ballet School

According to reports in various Berlin newspapers, Ralf Stabel, the former director of the Berlin State Ballet School, is returning to the institution, albeit in a different role. Stabel was rehabilitated by the Senate Administration after it lost five court cases concerning his dismissal. He had headed the school from 2007 to 2020 and, like artistic director Gregor Seyffert, was dismissed by former education senator Sandra Scheeres in 2020.

Jonathan dos Santos takes over as acting director of the ballet in Schwerin.
Following the resignation of ballet director Xenia Wiest, her ballet master and choreographic assistant Jonathan dos Santos will temporarily take over the direction of Ballet X in Schwerin for the next two seasons, according to the theatre. The planned programme will also be shown in this way, announced General Director Hans-Georg Wegner. Dos Santos comes from Brazil and has danced in Nordhausen, Halle and with Gauthier Dance in Stuttgart. He also choreographs his own works, including the ballet evening “Bach past – present – future”, which he created together with his former director.

Julien Favreau, a dancer with Béjart Ballet Lausanne for 30 years and soloist in a number of
key roles in the repertoire of Maurice Béjart and Gil Roman, was appointed Artistic Director of
the company on Friday 28 June. This appointment guarantees the continuation of Maurice Béjart’s artistic legacy and reinforces the extremely dynamic new impetus that the company has been experiencing since Julien Favreau took over as interim artistic director.

Prof. Katharina Christl Appointed New Principal of Palucca University of Dance Dresden

On June 24, 2024, Palucca University of Dance Dresden announced that Prof. Katharina Christl has been selected as the new principal of the institution. She will succeed Prof. Jason Beechey and is expected to be officially appointed by Sebastian Gemkow, the Saxon State Minister for Science, Culture, and Tourism, in August 2024. The appointment of the new principal was made by a commission consisting of representatives from the university and external experts in the fields of dance, culture, and academia.

Prof. Katharina Christl, a native of Dresden and former Palucca student, has been a professor of choreography since 2015 and leads the Master’s program in Choreography at Palucca University of Dance Dresden. She is internationally renowned in the field of dance and choreography. Since 1998, she has gained experience as a freelance dancer worldwide, engaged in interdisciplinary work, and served as a guest lecturer and dance educator with prestigious dance companies, festivals, and institutions.

Prof. Christl expressed her honor at taking the helm of such a prestigious institution known for its artistic excellence, outstanding education, and rich history. Palucca University of Dance Dresden has always been a creative hub for innovative contemporary dance with international impact. Prof. Christl looks forward to continuing the successful work initiated by Prof. Jason Beechey and the entire team at the university. She emphasized her vision for the institution’s future: “I am committed to fostering experimentation and creating new synergies at Palucca University of Dance Dresden, promoting an open campus.”

Der amerikanische Choreograf William Forsythe, ehemaliger Ballettdirektor in Frankfurt am Main, hat den diesjährigen Kyoto-Preis zugesprochen bekommen, eine alljährlich verliehene Auszeichnung für überragende Leistungen in Wissenschaft und Kunst. Der Preis ist mit ca. 600.000 Euro dotiert und wird seit 1985 in den drei Kategorien Technologie, Grundlagenforschung und Kunst/Philosophie vergeben. Er wird auch „der Nobelpreis der Künste“ genannt und gilt als eine der höchsten Auszeichnungen für Verdienste um Wissenschaft und Kultur. Aus dem Bereich Tanz wurden, neben zahlreichen Komponisten, Architekten, Autoren, Philosophen etc., bisher nur Maurice Béjart, Pina Bausch und John Neumeier damit ausgezeichnet.

Mit „Flying Bach“ fing es 2010 an – die Flying Steps Flying Steps aus , Deutschlands -Urgestein, machen seitdem den Street Dance in Groß- und Kleinstädten, in Kirchen und Stadthallen salonfähig und beweisen der Szene, dass man hauptberuflich vom Breakdancen leben kann. Damals tanzten sie zu den Fugen aus Johann Sebastian Bachs „Wohltemperiertem Klavier“, und das dermaßen erfolgreich, dass sie bis heute mit dem Stück auf Tournee sind. Mit der surrealen Zaubershow „Flying Illusion“ füllten sie dann die ganz großen Hallen, mit „Flying Dreams“ waren sie im Varieté, in „Flying Pictures“ ließen sie sich im Museum von Modest Mussorgskys „Bilder einer Ausstellung“ inspirieren. Und jetzt sind sie mit ihrer neuen Produktion im Knusperhäuschen gelandet, versetzen das alte Märchen von Hänsel und Gretel in die Influencer-Szene. Premiere war im Oktober im Berliner Admiralspalast, seit Mai ist die neue Show auf großer Tour, zunächst durch Deutschland, dann in China und im Herbst in Österreich.
