BACKWORLD – For The Life Of The World (CD)
Ein neuer Himmel und eine neue Welt werden gesehen, denn der alte Himmel und die alte Welt sind gestorben. So verheißungsvoll und nachrufend beginnt das neue Album von Backworld. „For the Life of The World” ist es betitelt und da verwundert es wenig, dass es viel mit christlicher Symbolik gespickt ist.
„The Children of Eden“, „Ashes To Diamonds“, „The Return of The Burning Times“ oder „The Hidden Order of Things“, um nur einige Singtitel zu nennen, verweisen deutlich auf Vergänglichkeit und Auferstehung bzw. Schöpfung und Neuentstehen.
In der musikalischen Untermalung bleibt man sich treu. Die Akustikgitarre spielt die Hauptrolle, dazu minimalistische Percussion oft nur mit dem Tamburine, ein Bass und im Hintergrund dezente Keyboardarrangements. Dazu der behutsam anmutende Gesang von Mastermind Joseph Budenholzer, der sich bei einigen Stücken auch von weiblichen Stimmen (MAYa Hardinge und Laure Kyle) begleiten lässt. So finden sich im Grunde genommen alle Zutaten, die man von diesem Neofolk-Projekt seit den World Serpent-Tagen gewohnt ist. Der Song „Spiraling“ mit seinem weiblichen Hauptgesang und der klanglichen Untermalung z.B., erinnert dann auch leicht an Rose McDowall‘s Version des Wicker Man Songs.
7 Jahre sind vergangen, seit es Studiomusik in Form einer Ein-Akt-Oper aus dem Hudson Valley zu hören gab. Davor gab es seit 2011 keine neuen Lieder mehr. Aber wen wundert es, ist doch mit Tonträgern heutzutage nichts mehr für den Geldbeutel zu holen. Umso überraschender kam die Ankündigung Ende letzten Jahres, dass dieses neue Album in den Startlöchern steht und das sogar unter der Beteiligung von David Tibet, der das letzte Lied „The Lamb And The Lion“ geschrieben hat und von drohender Cellomusik begleitet auch singt. Offenbar sind noch nicht sämtliche Bande der World-Serpent-Familie zerrissen. Dieses letzte Lied greift die Tonfolge des ersten Stückes auf diesem Album auf und zieht ein Resumé was aus der neuen Welt und dem neuen Himmel geworden ist.
Die 11 Lieder auf „For The Life Of The World“ zeigen auch nach langer Abstinenz vom Studiomikro, das Joe Budenholzer noch immer ein wichtiger Pionier des Neo- bzw. Apocalyptic Folks ist, den er gekonnt mit den Elementen klassischer Musik eine traditionelle Note verleiht, deren Mystik einen immer wieder das Album von vorn beginnen lässt.
Wer sich davon überzeugen möchte, sollte hier zugreifen oder wartet bis zum Pfingstfest, denn da spielen Backworld auf dem WGT. Zudem hat Joseph Budenholzer anklingen lassen, im Mai und Juni für weitere Konzerte in Europa zur Verfügung zu stehen. Also ran an den Speck Ihr Ratten! (Mäuse?)

"Genau genommen ist Inanis Yoake ein Duo und besteht aus den beiden Gründern Simone Skeleton und Risa Hara. Die beiden gründeten die Band vor zwei Jahren in London und brachten kurze Zeit später ein Debüt heraus, auf dessen Sound irgendwo zwischen Post Punk-Nostalgie und der Feierlichkeit eines szenetauglichen Dark Folk nicht komplett, aber zum Teil auf die Mitwirkung renommierter Gäste wie Lloyd James und Tony Wakeford zurückging.
Gut zwei Jahre später steht nun der Nachfolger in den Regalen, und dieser ist insgesamt noch kollaborativer ausgefallen. Und da die diesmal mitwirkenden Künstler aus allen möglichen Ecken alternativer Undergroundmusik kommen, ist – trotz des erneut postpunkigen Schwerpunktes – eine gewisse Heterogenität Programm.
Das Album startet gleich mit einem Song, der so ein bisschen dass Inanis Yoake-Minimum zusammenfasst. Was mit einem Ambientdrone und einem leicht verfremdeten Piano startet, steigert sich immer mehr in einen 80slastige Wavesong mit der entsprechend pulsierenden Monotonie zu Kopfhänger-Pathos – eine Szenerie, in die sich noch eine Akustikgitarre als Neofolk-Referenz mischt. Bei “Nowhere”, das noch opulentere Keyboard-Passagen aufweist, steigert sich die Goth-angehauchte Stimmung zu einem Ohrwurm, bei dem am meisten der ernste Gesang Roberto Confortis im Gedächtnis hängen bleibt. Es gibt im Verlauf des Albums einige potenzielle Clubhits dieser Art, zum Teil (“Niente Resta” und “Miraggio”, bei dem Risas entrücktes Piano wie so oft den roten Faden bildet) in spanisch gesungen, was Assoziationen zu dem kraftvollen Elektropop von Comando Suzie erlaubt. Nach einem Auftakt aus melodischen Gitarren und erwartungsvollem Beckenrauschen erscheint “The Edge of Your Street” der dezent in den Hintergrund gemischte Gesang Tony Wakefords auf dem Plan, der hier auch den Bass beisteuert.
Sollte ich besondere Wegmarken benennen, dann wären es die Songs mit weiblichen Guestvocals. Neben “Abandoned”, das mit dem Gesang von Vivienne Cure fast etwas an eine tiefere Version von Eyeless in Gaza erinnert, sind das vor allem “The Abyss in You” und “In the Heart of Nothing”: hier übernimmt die Schlagzeugerin und Theaterfrau Emiko Ota neben einer verspielten Perkussion, die gelegentlich in entfesseltes Freakout mündet, auch den feierlich entrückten Gesang, der v.a. im Zusammenspiel mit der Violine von Matt Howden zu den Höhepunkten des Albums zählt. Review SONIC SEDUCER Magazin: DAWN+DUSK ENTWINED - When I Die Burn Me In The Clothes Of My Youth CD.
"Auch schon so etwas wie eine Legende! Denn der Franzose David Sabre, der bereits seit 1995 aktiv ist, hat sich insbesondere in den Nuller-Jahren durch Veröffentlichungen auf Kult-Labels wie Cold Meat Industry oder Athanor im Dark Ambient/Neofolk-Underground einen sehr guten Namen gemacht. Nachdem sich Sabre in den letzten Jahren mit Godwin Point und This Stranger Within mit Postpunk/Darkwave-Sounds ein weiteres musikalisches Standbein aufgebaut hat, widmet er sich nun wieder seiner alten Kultband. Aber besagte Projekte haben durchaus Spuren im Sound vom neuen Album hinterlassen, dieses ist weniger düster als sein Frühwerk. Und eingängiger; es erinnert an Bands wie Trisomie 21 oder Kirlian Camera (auch hier singt bisweilen eine Frau, die renommierte Opernsängerin Helène Carpentier). Ohnehin ist der Mann wieder sehr aktiv, nachdem er von 2011 bis 2020 fast ein Jahrzehnt Pause eingelegt hat. Beim perfekten „When I Die, Burn Me In The Clothes Of My Youth“, so der komplette Titel des Albums, gibt es nur ein einziges kleines Haar in der Suppe - Nämlich, dass sich offenbar Künstler und Label sträuben, auf den andauernden Vinyl-Hype aufzuspringen. Als LP wäre das für das Album sicherlich noch mehr ein zeitloses Juwel im heimischen Plattenschrank. " Uwe Marx
