"Jakob Lehmann's vision of a purified, historically informed but never dogmatically rigid Rossini buffa is striking. The ensemble performance impresses and inspires even the less experienced singers, whose impulsiveness and enthusiasm quickly make them forget any minor imperfections. Hannah Ludwig's powerful-voiced and witty Isabella is particularly convincing." rbbKultur

"The recording released by PanClassics is, as the applause after the individual musical numbers proves, a recording of a concert and combines a prominent cast of singers with a highly professional orchestral accompaniment. The interplay of modern woodwinds and strings with gut strings is effective and the accompaniment of the recitatives not only with a keyboard instrument, but with cello, double bass and fortepiano makes sense.

Even in the Sinfonia, all contrasts are exhausted in terms of volume and speed, there are flashes of irony and the finales are skilfully built up in a constant escalation. The freshness of the playing and the harmonious interaction with the solo singers increasingly put the listener in a good mood." Operalounge

***** REVIEW

"While Rossini's work had already been the subject of a number of experiments on period instruments (the Ca****la Coloniensis and Gabriele Ferro in the 1970s-1980s, Marc Minkowski and Jean-Christophe Spinosi more recently), none had ever gone so far in terms of musicological research, and the result is singularly seductive. At the centre of this astonishing approach is conductor Jakob Lehmann, whose 'historically informed' approach has led him to a radically new interpretation of Rossini's music, full of freedom, in which the orchestra itself no longer accompanies but really carries the action with inventive phrasing, a sense of rhythm, accents and lines, and impressive virtuosity in relentless, rigorously precise accelerandi. One can savour the lightness of the woodwinds, the varied colours of the brass and, as a bonus, particularly in the overture, a play on variations and appogiaturas that completely renews the spirit. It may come as a surprise that this novelty comes to us from Germany, where the Eroica Berlin orchestra, founded by Jakob Lehmann, is based." L'Avant-Scène Opéra

REVIEW

"Right from the very first bars, I sat up straight. A live recording (from the Delphi Theatre in Berlin), a small label, young soloists, a conductor not known as a Rossini specialist - it was reminiscent of the recordings from the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad: nice, sympathetic but not something to have great expectations of. It turned out differently and even became a big surprise! Not only because of the sparkling interpretations, but especially because of the way conductor Jakob Lehmann and the ensemble Eroica Berlin handled the score. It also soon became clear that terms like historicising or authentic approach here only approximate how they went about their work." Paul Korenhof for Opus Klassiek

The Polish-Jewish composer Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996), who lost his family due to National Socialism, fled to Russia and, again, was later subjected to Stalinist persecution, was one of the unjustly forgotten composers of the 20th century until recently. He left behind a considerable oeuvre and, since the advent of an impressive Renaissance during recent years, he is today considered one of the most important composers of the Soviet Union alongside Shostakovich and Prokofiev.
The Idiot, based on the novel of the same title by Dostoyevsky, is Weinberg's final opera, composed during the mid-1980s. This live recording from the Mannheim National Theatre in 2014 documents the production with which Weinberg's Idiot received its world premiere one year previously in Mannheim, unanimously celebrated by audiences and critics alike. The renowned specialists' journal "Die Opernwelt" even named the production "the performance of the year".

REVIEW 17/20

"Von der ersten Minute an prickelt die Stimmung, fliegen die musikalischen Bälle in aberwitzigem Tempo hin und her, überträgt sich die Spielfreude. Dabei gibt es veritable Entdeckungen, wenn etwa David Ostrek mit viel komischem Gespür den Mustafá gibt oder Hannah Ludwig die ihre eigenwillige Isabella sorglos auch mal aggressiv röhren lässt, um sich danach sogleich wieder in reinere Höhen aufzuschwingen." The Neue Männerchor Berlin is a young and dynamic male choir that works on a project basis. The ensemble was founded in 2019 by Adrian Emans and has since realised a number of exciting projects, including concerts, collaborations with renowned orchestras and radio play recordings for Deutschlandfunk Kultur. In May 2022, the Neue Männerchor Berlin made its debut in the Chamber Music Hall of the Philharmonie as part of the Berlin Choir Association's Sunday concert series. Also in May 2022, the choir achieved an "outstanding success" at the Berlin Choral Meeting and was forwarded to the German Choir Competition in Hanover 2023 with 24.6 out of 25 points. There, the choir achieved a "very good success" and 4th place at the top of the German choral scene.

The Neue Männerchor Berlin is made up of vocal students, former music students and singers with many years of choral experience and is put together on a project-by-project basis. The choir's musical focus is on a ca****la literature, but choral symphonic projects are also part of the musical programme.

The Neuer Männerchor Berlin is a partner ensemble of the Neuer Kammerchor Berlin and has been a registered non-profit organisation since 2023.

REVIEW ****

"First of all, there is the enormous musical spontaneity achieved by conductor Jakob Lehmann. Also noteworthy is the historically informed orchestral playing, which is unusual for its dry sharpness and fine chasing, but stands out for its rare richness of detail. The emphasis on the bass foundation with three double basses (as opposed to 11 violins) is very unusual.

The continuo group of fortepiano, cello, and double bass is also unusual.

The vocal ensemble is young and sings with enthusiasm. David Ostrek is a pleasantly singing (i.e. not exaggerating) Mustafa, Hannah Ludwig a characterful and vocally quite remarkable, full-sounding Isabella." Pizzicato

REVIEW

"The latter produces the closest to a period sound yet heard on any recording of “L’Italiana,” including the past year’s release from Glossa Music. For example, the use of a fortepiano creates an intriguing soundscape in the recitatives; it is seemingly at odds with the recording tradition by unmasking the music’s historical roots, so to speak.." Eroica Berlin is a chamber orchestra made up of young Berlin musicians and was founded by Jakob Lehmann in 2015. The direct, unfiltered transmission of emotions and the incorporation of insights from historical performance practice unite the ensemble, as does the conviction that in today's event and performance culture, the music itself and its content must take centre stage despite everything. The musicians search with energy and enthusiasm for ways to give classical music the central position in the society of the future that it already has in their own lives. Eroica Berlin has performed at leading venues in Germany and Austria, such as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Brucknerhaus Linz, and works with renowned soloists. In 2022, the chamber orchestra was accepted into Neustart Kultur's ensemble funding programme and will present a series of concerts at its musical home, the Theater in Delphi in Berlin-Weißensee, featuring works by composers as diverse as Johann Sebastian Bach, Gioachino Rossini, Sofia Gubaidulina and Arvo Pärt. In November 2022, the ensemble will perform in the Berlin Philharmonie for the first time.
