Thirty refugees gathered this Tuesday at one of DW Akademie partner Young Power in Social Action (YPSA)’s listener clubs in the district of to meet with Karim Khan, Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court - ICC
At the camp, refugees and locals produce a weekly show, "Palonger Hota" (Voice of Palong), and discuss it in listener groups. Local volunteers produce program content on everyday matters within the camps and nearby villages. Due to the Rohingya's low literacy rate, especially among women, radio is an important medium for spreading information. The program broadcasts on the state radio station Betar and is supported byGermany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development ( .
At the meeting they discussed Khan’s interview with the show's community reporters more than a year ago and the progress of the ongoing investigation into the atrocities that caused the Rohingya's mass-exodus from neighboring Myanmar in 2017. On Wednesday, Khan filed an application for an arrest warrant for Senior General and Acting President Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Defence Services, based on the belief that he “bears criminal responsibility for the crimes against humanity of deportation and persecution of the Rohingya, committed in Myanmar, and in part in Bangladesh.”
“Media, such as your radio program, have the power to connect large groups of Rohingya and Bangladeshi people at one time,” Khan said, “to inform the international community and people who can play a good role to give justice to the Rohingya."

Last year, DW Akademie interviewed Meena Akbari, an Afghan refugee and citizen journalist, who had just arrived in , Pakistan
- DW Akademie: To what extent does this project "Displacement and Dialogue" with its trainings in Constructive Journalism support you in your daily work?
- Meena Akbari: I am now confident to use my mobile for storytelling. I have reported many issues by using the smart phone. I felt empowered.
- DW Akademie: How has the product improved the quality of your work?
- Meena Akbari: One can see a clear change in my work after Tribal News Network and DW Akademie trainings. I used to be a presenter and was less aware of reporting but these trainings taught me the reporting skills and expertise. Now I can produce digital reports as well as news reports.
- DW Akademie: How did the trainings ensure that we survived the crisis well and are prepared for future crises?
- Meena Akbari: After the trainings, I have started reporting on Afghan refugees in Pakistan to highlight the basic issues and problems they are facing and let the concerned authorities respond to that. Working in crisis situations has made me confident of carrying out journalistic work even in exile.
I would like to share one of my stories here that brought a very positive feedback. Dozens of Afghan refugees, including women and children, had been protesting for one month in front of the National Press Club Islamabad, but none of the Pakistani media organizations had reported on their sit-in. I was the first one who went and produced a digital report and broadcast it through TNN's social media platforms. Interestingly, a UNHCR official saw my video and asked me to brief them about the issue, as they were unaware of it. After the report UNHCR started paying attention to the refugees' demands and began their registration.
- DW Akademie: What positive changes have you seen in your community?
- Meena Akbari: I was totally unaware of media ethics and video shooting techniques prior to these trainings. When my friends and other people now see my reports, they say that I am producing content of a very good standard. I got a number of offers from different media organizations after they watched my video reports on TNN. My success is the success of my community because now I can highlight the issues of my community in a more efficient way.
- DW Akademie: What new ideas or approaches have emerged that specifically change something on site?
- Meena Akbari: As I said earlier, because of my story UNHCR had heard the voices of newly arrived Afghan emigrants and started helping them. I have another success story in my journalistic career. I had produced a report on an Afghan female journalist whose life was in danger. She had applied for a visa to but did not get the response from the embassy. After my report aired, she got call from the embassy and her case got cleared. Now she is in Germany."

Recently, DW journalists joined forces with university lecturers and students at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta for a 3-day event focused on Media and Information Literacy ( ), with a special emphasis on disinformation.

Before the event, the journalists received Train-the-Trainer (TTT) sessions from DW Akademie’s international trainers, equipping them with the skills to share their knowledge with lecturers. Together, they then worked directly with students, teaching them how to critically assess media and spot disinformation.

The event also included campus dialogues, where journalists, lecturers, and students came together to discuss the local impacts of disinformation, build media literacy, and foster resilience against disinformation. These discussions played a crucial role in encouraging responsible digital engagement among the younger generation.

Together, we are empowering students to become critical thinkers and informed digital citizens! 💡🌱
