What a night at the Oscars, right? 🏆
Everybody is talking about ***the slap*** & Hans Zimmer celebrating his second Oscar in a bathrobe in a Hotel in Amsterdam. Crazy times we’re living in!
There’s only one thing left to say: Congratulations, dear Hans, for a well-deserved win! 🎉🎉🎉
Last year, we had the great pleasure to welcome this exceptional composer & artist at DLD Circular, talking with stage designer Es Devlin and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist about the artistic view on circularity.
The whole session is available to watch on our YouTube channel.

Here’s our Sunday treat for you: a superstar session from our archives that we consider to be one of the most iconic fashion panels ever staged at DLD.
Net-à-Porter (@netaporter) founder Natalie Massenet joined Margareta van den Bosch (Creative Director for @hm) and NYU marketing guru Scott Galloway at DLD 2011 for a panel about digital change in the luxury goods market.
Moderated by then-Financial Times journalist Vanessa Friedman – now Fashion Director at the New York Times –, the panel explored how brands would be able to build a direct relationship with their fans and better market themselves in the digital world.
Prepare to be amazed when you see how quickly all of this played out. Within a few years, many of the topics that seemed mere possibilities at the time became the new gold standard of doing business.
One example: “We have active plans to use our users to help market the product”, said Natalie Massenet. Any influencers out there who feel she’s talking about you?
Watch this video and see how far we’ve come. We hope you enjoy this insightful trip down memory lane as much as we did when we revisited this very special DLD session.
As for the future, make sure to tune in to our upcoming DLD Sync webinar with Positive Luxury co-founder Diana Verde Nieto and Bettina Fetzer (Mercedes Benz) next Thursday, January 27. Participation is free, you’ll find the registration link in our bio.

What’s the biggest enemy of the coronavirus? Human ingenuity, and our willingness to stand together. “I think only an alien invasion” could have prompted the same level of international collaboration as fighting the pandemic has, Harvard Professor Dr. Pardis Sabeti (@pardis_sabeti) observes in her DLD session with Merck Chairman Stefan Oschmann and journalist Sara Weber (@sara__weber).
As a computational biologist, Dr. Sabeti specializes in detecting and investigating infectious diseases. Data analytics can help us better understand pandemic outbreaks, as she illustrates in her DLD presentation. And she’s confident that mRNA vaccines will prove to be “a very big tool in our arsenal“ to fight novel viruses in the future as well. “When we find a new viral threat”, she says, “we could immediately start developing a vaccine in short order.” But ending the current pandemic, Dr. Sabeti points out, requires a collective effort – and convincing skeptics that acting for the benefit of all is also in their own interest. “You have to show that altruism and collaboration is not just the right choice, and the ethically correct choice”, she says. “It’s actually the best choice.” The video of this riveting DLD session is as timely and important as ever – watch it now on our website.

BMW (@bmwgroup) has big plans when it comes to sustainability. “Our ambition is to build the greenest electric vehicles in our industry – from raw materials, the supply chain, and production, up to recycling”, CEO Oliver Zipse told us in an inspiring DLD All Stars conversation with DLD founder Steffi Czerny (@czernysteffi).
Already, BMW’s car production is using 100% green electricity, the company says, and every part of the production is being reevaluated to maximize the usage of more sustainable materials, whenever possible. “It’s fun to be part of a revolution”, Zipse said enthusiastically. “And car production is something highly innovative today.” Make sure you watch this session to hear about more ways in which BMW is spearheading the transition to a circular economy.

Can you imagine moving to Detroit, Norway or Kazakhstan for the nice weather? Right now, that idea may seem far-fetched, but climate change could turn any of these places into a “climate oasis”, author and strategic consultant Parag Khanna (@drparagkhanna) told us at DLD Circular.
His riveting presentation left no doubt that humans will need to adapt to disruptions on different levels: as some places become inhabitable, others will suddenly seem attractive – and people will move. This will bring political and economic disruptions as well. What exactly the future may bring is hard to predict, Parag says, “but one thing is for sure: we have to adapt to it. It will not adapt to us.” That means we need to dramatically rethink the way we live and work. “Cities need to be movable. Infrastructure needs to be movable”, Parag argues. “We need to be able to have people live in colonies that we build in which there is solar power, wind power, battery power, in which water is collected, or treated and recycled, in which it is channeled into hydroponic and aquaponic food production systems.”
For more insights about where the world is heading, be sure to watch the video of this fascinating DLD and get a copy of Parag’s latest book “MOVE: The Forces Uprooting Us”.

We’re all unique, so clearly we need personal medicine to find unique treatments for each and every one of us.
Watch this conversation between DLD All Stars Anne Wojcicki (@annewoj23)and Kara Swisher (@karaswisher) to find out how personal genomics is getting us close to reaching this goal.
With her company 23andMe, Anne has been a pioneer of making DNA analysis affordable. She’s convinced that helping people gain knowledge about their genome will also benefit society, by creating a new platform for healthcare. “We have an incredible opportunity to develop novel therapeutics that have a huge impact”, she told Kara. The video has much more about this exciting development and how 23andMe (@23andme) aims to usher in a new era of truly personalized healthcare. Check it out!

If the world around you seems to be speeding up, that’s because the digital age is morphing into the “exponential age”, bestselling author and analyst Azeem Azhar (@azeem) argues. In his wildly popular Exponential View newsletter and podcast he shows many examples of technologies intersecting and accelerating each other. “We really saw the power of technology during the pandemic year”, Azeem pointed out in his engaging DLD All Stars session with Axios reporter Ina Fried (@inafried). Never have highly effective vaccines been developed faster than against the coronavirus, and that was possible only because of advanced computing coming together with dramatic progress in biology and medicine. But Azeem also sees many challenges. One of the biggest, he says, is keeping up with this relentless pace of change both as individuals and society. “I think we’ve lost sight of the fact that we make technology – and also technology shapes us.” What to do? Watch the video for Azeem’s proposals, along with many more insights into frontier technologies shaping our world of tomorrow.

Born in Turkey, award-winning novelist Elif Shafak (@shafakelif) is a true delight, and we love having her at DLD. Elif has written 19 books that have been translated into 54 languages. Her words, her wisdom are always captivating. In her All Stars session with Hans Ulrich Obrist (@hansulrichobrist) she spoke about our hopes and fears in an age of uncertainty. How come, she asked, so many of us feel voiceless even though we’re constantly on social media? And she made an appeal to put climate and inequality at the center of public discussion to find solutions for a better tomorrow. Tip: If you’re looking for a perfect Christmas gift, be sure to take a look at Elif’s latest book, The Island of Missing Trees. And when you do, buy two – because you’ll want to keep one copy for yourself.
