Yesterday was a tough day for . handled dozens of phone calls for people trapped in a high rise fire in the Bronx. The dispatchers in the Bronx Communications Office were able to quickly and efficiently send fire companies and Ems resources to the scene. Fire Alarm Dispatchers from every borough fielded the phone calls for people trapped. They were a calm voice for the desperate people. Everyone who operated on scene and behind the radio and phone, keep your head up high. As the old Bronx CO sign says; “THROUGH THESE DOORS PASS THE BEST DISPATCHERS IN THE WORLD”

In a few minutes (615p), Jimmy Raftery, Bronx dispatcher 150 is signing off the air & retiring after 25 years. Today was a horrific fire- the FDNY showed their bravery as they rescued many & behind the radio Jimmy was the voice in the Bronx- cool calm & collective, directing companies in the professional manner as he always has. Jimmy loves the fire service & took time to know both jobs of dispatching & firefighting. He is an old school dispatcher as he was trained by the hand of tradition of the FDNY; he didn't learn by listening to a computer, he learned the old school way. He knew his boro & gave great accurate instructions or directions. For a victim on the phone pleading for help, Jimmy was the calming yet stern voice, reassuring them that help was on the way.
It has been a pleasure working with you & being trained by you, Jim. Enjoy the next chapter of your life!
