After a long break there is finally a new episode of "Bugle Call Radio - The Podcast all about Swing!" available. This one turned out very special, because I experimented with background sounds, that will hopefully make the experience of our virtual walk through the nightclubs of Harlem more realistic ;)
Enjoy our little stroll, on which we will meet some interesting people, that influenced the time of the Harlem Renaissance and jazz music in general. Leave me a comment, how you liked it.
I am recording a new episode for you! It was about time. But good things will come to those who wait and I am putting a special amount of effort into this baby. Stay excited, this episode will be mighty special!

Happy Birthday, Bugle Call Radio! 🥳
One year ago I decided to finally share my passion about swing, jazz and the stories all around that music, that is my life. There it is, out in the world. Hopefully finding other enthusiasts or Soon-to-be-Jazz-lovers ❤️
Thank you to everybody who ever gave my podcast a listen. But especially I want to thank my PATRONS! Without you the financial efforts would be way to high, to cover this project, that I do just for the sake of it. So THANK YOU, a million times.
I am promising you a new episode for quite some time now. I am on it... this episode demands more attention from me than I expected. But it will be great.
Have a beautiful Sunday 🥳 and celebrate this special day with me!

Today we celebrate the 95th birthday of the famous Savoy Ballroom that opened its doors on 12th of March 1926! 🥳
The Savoy was not only a good place to dance, but also to listen to the finest Swing music you could imagine. Also many „Battles of the Bands“ took place there and it all began when Benny Goodman tried to push the house band of Chick Webb off their throne in 1936. But he had no chance. A year later the „King of Savoy“ was challenged by Count Basie. The applause for both bands was tremendous and it was hard to tell, who was better. In the end the crowd was loyal to their house band and the ballots taken showed Webb‘s band in lead over Basie‘s.

Last question! Last tip!
You still have time to solve the quiz today! Send me the solution via PM and win a „Bugle Call Radio“ mug!
6th and las question: In which US state is the jazz city of Kansas City located?
The 1st letter of this state is the last letter of the solution word!
Tip: It is not Kansas 🙃 The motto of the state is „Salus populi suprema lex esto“
Done! 🧐
07/12/2020
Tip number 5 is yet to come!
The 5th question is: What great Blues singer and good friend of Benny Goodman gave him the advice to contact Fletcher Henderson to buy his outstanding arrangements from him, so that Goodman‘s band could finally achieve a breakthrough? Please write down the letter you can find in the 6th position of the first name, or the 5th position of the last name.
And of course here comes the hint for you: A well-known cream liqueur has the same name as her last name is.
Do you know, which lady we are looking for?
06/12/2020
Almost through! Here comes hint number 4!
Question number 4 is: What is the name of Billie Holiday‘s best friend, who also plays an outstanding saxophone solo in the song „All Of Me“, we listened to in episode 1 „Giving You All Of Me“? We need the 1st letter of his first name to put it in the 4th place of the solution word.
My tipp: His last name is the opposite of „old“ 👵🏽👴🏼
Good luck guessing!!!
04/12/2020
It‘s time for tip number 3! There we go!
This is question number 3: Mercer Ellington and Billy Strayhorn once locked themselves in a hotel room over night with a certain drink, in order to write legendary songs for Duke Ellington, such as „Take the A-Train“ or „Things Ain‘t What They Used To Be“. What fruit was the wine made of that apparently spurred their creativity? We need the 8th or 9th letter from this word to put it on 3rd position of the solution word.
Hint: Do you know those smartphones that have the keyboard on the device, beneath the display? The brand that produces these smartphones has the same name as the fruit. And no, it is not 🍎😜
Can you guess it?
It‘s still possible to take part at the quiz! You can find all the questions at the end of episode 5 „On the radio“! Have fun and good luck! 🍀

Hint number 2 for question number 2 of the „Bugle Call Radio“ quiz from Episode 5 „On the Radio“.
Actually, the question itself is much too simple, but there is still a tip...
This was question number 2: One musician had a hard time producing good recordings for the special V-Discs, because he was constantly using obscene words. Therefore most of songs of the "Clown Prince of Jazz" could not be send to the soldiers as encouragement.
Write down the 2nd letter of the 1st or the last name of this musician.
And here comes a hint: The first name of the musician you are looking for is actually Thomas. But since almost nobody knows him by his real name, we are of course looking for his nickname, which he got because he was so... big!
Well, who is the sought-after pianist and singer? 🎙🎹

A new episode of "Bugle Call Radio - The Podcast all about Swing" is now available! Hooray! 🎺
For most people television is the number one medium, I think. But I myself am an absolute radio lover. I grew up listening to it all day long and still today it accompanies me every day. In the heyday of Swing there was no television and people gathered at home around the radio to be entertained and informed.
In this episode I unravel for you the complex history of the invention of the radio, tell you about how radio crowned Benny Goodman the “King of Swing” and how Swing was used as an insidious weapon in World War II. Of course, all this is interspersed with the unique flair of the radio program from the past – the conversations, the commercials, the music. Enjoy this episode of Bugle Call Radio – this time the name says it all! 📻
Hope you enjoy your weekend! Sending you a lot of hugs!
Yours Karin

In a few days I will release a new podcast episode and this time the name says it all: We will come back to the old radio shows from the Swing Era. First of all to Benny Goodman in his show "Camel Caravan" and how he developed to become the "King of Swing". Here's a little teaser of what you can expect in the new episode. This episode of Camel Caravan was broadcasted on October 28th, 1939. Almost exactly 81 years ago. Make yourself at home and enjoy this wonderfully swinging radio show.

Have you ever asked yourself how it can be that in all history books it is written that a white band made the very first jazz recording ever?
This is an excerpt from episode #4 of "Bugle Call Radio - The Podcast all about Swing!". Check out the new episode if you want to hear more interesting stories revolving around Swing and Jazz!
Tatatataaaa, here comes episode number 4 of Bugle Call Radio - The Podcast all about Swing! 🎺 From the First Sound Recording to V-Discs!
Listening to music at home was not always as easy as it is today. Many inventions and innovations paved the way. In this episode we will look at the very first steps of sound recording, the very first records, the first ever (controversial) jazz recording, and why most of Fats Waller's recordings would not make it onto V-Discs.
Do you want to find out why I need your support and in which ways you can contribute to my project? Then watch my little video and donate to help to keep the podcast alive!

I picked another famous swing standard to present it to you. Things ain't what they used to be. Ironically this song describes the current mood quite well, don't you think?
This time we are travelling to Kansas City, to get introduced to some hep cats that fundamentally influenced and changed jazz and swing music. Welcome to Kansas City!
So here it is, my very first podcast episode. I had no equipment but my laptop, but I finally did it! For the first episode I chose to talk about a very well known and popular song. Perhaps the title of this episode has already revealed, which song I picked?

Hi, I’m Karin! Nice to meet you...
My parents came over from Poland to Germany in 1989, in the smallest and most packed Polish socialist car you can imagine. My mum was already pregnant, so I was born a few months later in 1990. After few stations in the country, we ended up staying in a small town in southwestern Germany, right between Trier and Saarbrücken – the latter should play a very special role in my future.
I did a halfway good Abitur (high school leaving examination in Germany) and decided to study sports sciences in Saarbrücken. Those were good times. The studies were interesting but not too demanding. Personally, however, I don’t think I was mature enough to study and I wasn’t particularly committed. But my degree was still quite good.
My next stop was Dortmund, where I did an internship with Borussia Dortmund for half a year. I was already interested in soccer in my youth and also played in a club. But that interest soon gave way to another. Because one Sunday I saw a group of people dancing in a park. I didn’t know what they were dancing there, so I asked. They were dancing Lindy Hop. And I knew immediately: I want to do that, too!
Back in Saarbrücken it took me while until I started a course. I had just finished a relationship and was going through a wild phase. But funnily enough, the roommate in my new shared apartment also danced Lindy Hop, which is why he was almost never at home. I didn’t know yet that it would soon look like this for me too…
Then I finally registered for my first Lindy Hop class with “Lindy Hop Saarbrücken” and started on 14 March 2016 and never stopped again. One hour a week soon became 3 hours a week and hours of hours of social dancing every Thursday and some weekends. My love for swing music developed insidiously during this time. I was invited to join the teaching team of “Lindy Hop Saarbrücken” and took over as a DJ for the social dances from time to time. The passion grabbed me so much that I started to sort the music for me, according to speed, styles, times. I organized DJ specials on some evenings, where I focused on certain musicians and handed out flyers with the biographies of these musicians among the dancers.
One thing led to another, my love for swing did not break off, it became stronger and stronger and I started researching music history and biographies. At some point in between, the idea for a podcast came up, because I wanted to share what I was discovering. But so much was happening in my life that I wasn’t ready to start until the Corona lockdown in Germany happened in March 2020. So I gathered all my courage and the result was “Bugle Call Radio – The Podcast all about Swing!” Special thanks to Kevin, my companion from the beginning of the Lindy Hop journey, for the naming and encouragement. It was your first idea and there was no better one :)
