Turkey is a neighbour, a trading partner and a candidate for EU accession. But as EU-Turkey relations become increasingly strained, MEPs are calling for de-escalation and dialogue.
Turkey is one of the EU's closest neighbours. It is a trading partner, a NATO ally and a candidate for EU membership. Parliament values the cooperation between the EU and Turkey, but in recent years, ties have become strained. MEPs are concerned about the continuing erosion of democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Ankara. Today, EU accession talks are at a standstill. "We should urge our Turkish colleagues to gain more credibility as a foreign power and as a democracy. Without credibility in terms of democracy in Ankara, we will not be able to avoid conflicts in the future." Turkey has occupied the northern part of Cyprus since its invasion in 1974. Turkey has repeatedly illegally entered Greek airspace and Greek and Cypriot territorial waters. Parliament condemns Turkey's violations of the sovereignty of member states and MEPs are calling on the Turkish government to cease exploration and drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. Ankara has also threatened to renege on the 2016 migration pact signed with the European Union. Parliament is urging all parties to continue peaceful and constructive dialogue and to promote the de-escalation of military activities.
