Sotheby's, for international auctions, presented an auction for the sale of orientalist paintings in London, and among the artworks that were sold was the painting The Market in Cairo by artist Leopold Karl Mueller, estimated at between 60 and 80 thousand pounds sterling and sold for 42 thousand pounds sterling.
The artist Mueller made the first of his nine visits to Cairo in the winter of 1873-1874, and was the inspiration for the first large-scale orientalist painting entitled Bedouin Camped near the Pyramids, and in 1881 he spent six months in the country, two of which were in Upper Egypt, and he stayed for two months....
