Santos-Dumont's 1906 Aeroplane (14-bis).... known as the "14-bis" or "Oiseau de proie" (bird of prey), was a significant milestone in aviation history. Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviation pioneer, designed and built this aircraft. On October 23, 1906, in Paris, France, Santos-Dumont flew the 14-bis in public for the first time, making it the first officially observed powered flight in Europe.

The 14-bis had a unique design, with a canard configuration featuring a small front wing for control and a larger rear wing for lift. It was powered by a lightweight, 50-horsepower, 7-cylinder engine, and used a pusher propeller at the back. The aircraft had a box-like fuselage with an open cockpit for the pilot.

During the flight on that historic day in Paris, Santos-Dumont covered a distance of about 60 meters (197 feet) in just 21.5 seconds, reaching an altitude of approximately 2 to 3 meters (6.5 to 10 feet). This achievement gained him significant recognition and made him a celebrated figure in the early aviation community.

It's worth noting that the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, had already achieved powered flights in the United States before Santos-Dumont's flight in 1906. However, their flights were not widely publicized in Europe at the time, which is why Santos-Dumont's flight received considerable attention and acclaim.

Santos-Dumont continued to make advancements in aviation, setting various records and contributing to the development of aircraft. His achievements and contributions to aviation technology played a crucial role in the early days of flight.

FLYING SAUCER_ U.F.O. ......1960's

The concept of a "flying saucer" gained significant popularity in the 1950s and 1960s during the height of the UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) craze. Many people reported seeing disc-shaped objects in the sky, which they believed to be extraterrestrial spacecraft. These objects were often described as flying saucers due to their shape.

However, it is important to note that despite the numerous reports, there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that these flying saucers were actually alien spacecraft. Many of the sightings were likely misidentifications of conventional objects, such as aircraft or weather phenomena. Some sightings may have been hoaxes or the result of psychological or perceptual factors.

In terms of technology, there were no known functioning flying saucers developed during the 1960s. Although various experimental aircraft designs were being explored, such as the Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar, they did not achieve sustained flight or widespread use.

Today, the term "flying saucer" is more commonly associated with popular culture and science fiction than with actual aircraft. It continues to be a symbol of the UFO phenomenon and remains a subject of interest for enthusiasts and researchers alike.

1962 Man-Powered Aircraft........

There were several notable human-powered gliders that were developed and flown. One such glider was the SUMPAC (Southampton University Man-Powered Aircraft), designed and built by students and engineers at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

The SUMPAC was a high-wing monoplane with a wingspan of 24 meters (78 feet 9 inches). It had a lightweight tubular steel frame covered with fabric. The glider was powered by a pedal-driven propeller located at the rear of the aircraft. The pilot sat in a reclined position and pedaled to generate the necessary thrust for takeoff and sustained flight.

On November 9, 1961, the SUMPAC successfully completed its first flight, with Derek Piggott, a professional glider pilot, at the controls. It covered a distance of 650 meters (2,130 feet) and reached an altitude of approximately 1 meter (3 feet) above the ground.

In subsequent flights, the SUMPAC achieved longer distances and higher altitudes. The team made several modifications to improve its performance, including changing the wing configuration and optimizing the propeller design. The glider set a world record on June 9, 1962, when Derek Piggott flew it for a distance of 908 meters (2,979 feet) at Lasham Airfield in Hampshire, England.

The SUMPAC project was a significant milestone in human-powered aviation and demonstrated the feasibility of sustained flight with a human-powered aircraft. It paved the way for further advancements in this field, including the development of the Gossamer Condor and Gossamer Albatross, which successfully crossed the English Channel in 1977.

Features of the Wright Brothers' Airplane:

Wings: The Wright Flyer had a biplane design, meaning it had two sets of wings stacked on top of each other. The wingspan was 40 feet and the wings had a cambered airfoil shape, similar to the wings of birds.

Wing-warping: One of the key innovations of the Wright brothers was the invention of wing-warping, a system that allowed them to control the roll and lateral balance of the aircraft. They achieved this by twisting or warping the wings using a series of cables and a hip cradle.

Rudder: The Wright Flyer had a vertical rudder at the rear, which was used to control the yaw, or the left and right movement of the aircraft. The rudder was linked to the wing-warping system, enabling coordinated turns.

Elevator: To control the pitch, or the up and down movement of the aircraft, the Wright brothers used a horizontal elevator situated at the front of the aircraft. The elevator could be adjusted to change the pitch angle, allowing them to control the climb and descent.

Engine: The Wright brothers' aircraft was powered by a 12-horsepower, four-cylinder internal combustion engine. The engine was designed and built by the brothers themselves. It had a chain-and-sprocket transmission system that drove two pusher propellers located behind the wings.

Controls: The pilot of the Wright Flyer lay prone on the lower wing, using a series of hip cradles and control sticks to manipulate the wing-warping and elevator systems. The aircraft had a system of wires and pulleys that transmitted the pilot's inputs to the control surfaces.

Frame: The airplane's framework was made of lightweight spruce and ash wood, with the critical parts reinforced using steel wires for strength. The wings had a braced structure, with wires connecting them to the central framework.

Landing Gear: The Wright Flyer had a skid-based landing gear system. It featured two wooden skids positioned at the front and a tail skid at the rear, which allowed the aircraft to slide along the ground during takeoff and landing.

The Wright brothers' airplane was a remarkable achievement, representing a culmination of their years of research and experimentation.
