October 11, 2022 Zimbabwe’s DJ Nyamz Wins US$25K Prize Spread the love ZTN Correspondent Germany based broadcaster and disc jockey, Tafadzwa Nyamuzihwa, popularly known as DJ Nyamz, is this year’s winner of the US$25 000 Holman prize. The Holman Prize for Blind Ambition awards three blind people from anywhere in the world up to US$25 000 each to carry out an idea that will involve personal growth and remove misconceptions about blindness. It is named after James Holman, a blind 19th century explorer who travelled the world extensively before the era of modern transportation. In an interview with Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN) Nyamuzihwa (38) said he will use the money to set up broadcasting studios in Zimbabwe and Uganda, that will employ and impart broadcasting skills to blind youths and those with low vision. “There are many talented disabled young people like myself who can benefit from the training programme. “Instead of radio stations struggling to get talent, the studios will send the talent to them, which will make things easy as radio stations have no time to train people,” he said. On why he chose Uganda among the beneficiaries of his project, DJ Nyamz simply said, “Why not Uganda…I get asked this question so many times and my answer to that is, why not Uganda?” without elaborating further. Tafadzwa Nyamuzihwa started his broadcasting career at Star FM in Zimbabwe in 2013 where he produced and presented a programme on disability called “Shining Star,” whose aim was to showcase that Persons with Disabilities can lead meaningful and successful lives. In 2019 he joined radio Flora, an online radio station in Germany where he hosts a popular programme, “The Big Chill,” on Wednesdays and Sundays which discusses African culture, music, the arts and current affairs. “The programme informs and educates people in Germany and around the world about Africa, it’s culture and vibe,” DJ Nyamz said. He told ZTN that on learning about winning the prize he was excited. “I couldn’t believe it, I was overwhelmed and did a dance around the room,” said Nyamuzihwa. Nyamuzihwa became blind at the age of 25 and while receiving skills training he developed an interest in being a radio presenter and DJ and learned how he could do the work using accessible software.
