WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Author Maurice Sendak offers a tale of suspense, action, and fun, with this story about a young boy named Max who wears a wolf suit to bed. Max has been naughty and is sent to bed without any dinner. The real adventure begins with the forest growing and creatures appearing as wild and free. Being wild with the wild things can be tiring, as Max discovers on his adventure. As things begin to happen in his room, creatures appear that are a cross between scary and funny. Winner of the Caldecott Medal and listed in the ‘Best Illustrated Children’s Books” for many years, this is a winner worth a look. Illustrations that will grab your eye and a written tale that will draw you and your children back again and again are what this story has to offer. Adventure, artwork, and fun are all wrapped up in one small package here.

Did you know? The word ‘library’ comes from the Latin ‘liber,’ meaning book. The oldest known library dates back to the 7th century BC in Nineveh! Nineveh was consumed by fire in around 612 BC. But while paper books are destroyed by fire, the clay tablets were in most cases baked harder, making them among the best preserved documents from thousands of years of Mesopotamian history.

J.K. Rowling, famous author of Harry Potter, has fond memories of The Little White Horse book and said in an interview: “The tone is perfect; a seamless mix of the fairy-tale and the real. As bilingual children toggle between two languages, they use cognitive resources beyond those required for simple language acquisition, Gigi Luk writes in a forthcoming edition of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Child Development. Recent research has shown that bilingual children outperform monolingual children on tasks that tap into executive function — skills having to do with attention control, reasoning, and flexible problem solving.

Their strength in those tasks likely results from coping with and overcoming the demand of managing two languages. In a bilingual environment, children learn to recognize meaningful speech sounds that belong to two different languages but share similar concepts.

Did you know that the original manuscript of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground (the early version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) was handwritten and illustrated by Lewis Carroll himself as a Christmas gift for Alice Liddell, the real girl who inspired the story. Carroll later expanded the tale into the version we know today, but the original handwritten book still exists and is housed in the British Library!
