As part of our series we asked some of our editors to share how they have been staying in touch with their communities during the last 1 ½ years. Today Benjamin Johnson, Magazine Editor at Nature Medicine shares his story.

“The pandemic has been a strange and difficult time for all of us. For me, it had a positive side, which was rediscovering my virologist roots. I trained as a virologist but have spent 10 years at Springer Nature, and so when the pandemic hit I started blogging about the virus, to inform the public and help my ex-colleagues find the latest COVID-19 research. Anyone working on COVID-19 in a lab or hospital is incredibly busy, so my weekly blog on the Nature Portfolio Microbiology Community helped researchers find the most important discoveries on the virus. Blogging is an important tool for sharing expert opinion quickly and many researchers have also written about COVID-19 for Nature’s community blogs, sharing their expert knowledge with other researchers and the public.”

Many people around the world are currently enjoying their vacation, far away from school and work. For today’s post in our series, we chose to share some of our books on Geology and Travel.

Our upcoming Palgrave Macmillan book Bondi Beach offers readers a unique ‘big history’ of the beach’s geological origins, management by Aboriginal people, environmental despoliation by white Australians, and the formation of beach cultures. It's also a local history of the name Bondi, motives of early land holders, hostilities between lifesavers and surfers and more. https://bit.ly/3rOxxjm

All learning is a travel and The Empty Sea is a travel in learning about the still mysterious landscape on Earth: the sea. The book is a modern version of "Moby Dick" that Herman Melville could have written if he had known what we know. It narrates the great journey of human beings: from the discovery of the sea, to the modern trends of overexploitation. https://bit.ly/3iSUkpS

The book, the Geotraveller, provides the reader with an understanding of geological processes through maps and photographs, and is a great travel companion, inspiring the reader to visit and experience the historical sites and national parks comprehensively described by the author. https://bit.ly/3BSQDct

Springer Geology is a prolific book series presenting unique sites for their geological significance. The series is intended for anyone aiming to learn the ins and outs of the most beautiful areas on the planet, including their geological origin and environmental influences. Check out the title Geological Resources of Tierra del Fuego as an example. https://bit.ly/3zLHy3s

The Majorcan flora is beautiful and if you enjoy hiking during your travels then you should definitely have a look at Quick Flora Mallorca. It's an easy and quick guide to identify plants from the region without even having prior knowledge on plant sciences. Horst Mehlhorn hopes this book helps people who are generally interested in plants but don’t know where to start. https://bit.ly/3l5gGaF

It probably takes longer than one trip to read Das Mittelmeer. The Mediterranean is a fragile ecosystem. If you want to find out about the marvels of this region and how you can help to protect it, this book gives you a detailed overview. It is part of Robert Hofrichter’s life work, a renowned expert on the region. https://bit.ly/2VdU0tQ
