Khabib vs MacGregor in Skype
23-year-old Roberto Duran made the sixth defence of the WBA lightweight title when he smashed Ray Lampkin to the canvas in the 14th round at the Gimnasio Nueva in his hometown of Panama City #OnThisDay in 1975.
Lampkin was rushed unconscious to a hospital where hours after the bout his condition was listed as “delicate and not serious.”
The knockout punch, a left hook, caught Lampkin flush on the jaw and he slammed his head on the canvas as he fell. It was the first time in his career he had been knocked out.
Lampkin was carried from the ring on a stretcher and 20 minutes later, after oxygen had been administered in the dressing room to no avail, was rushed to the Caja del Seguro Social Clinic.
He regained consciousness about a half‐hour after his hospitalisation, or about 80 minutes after he was knocked out.
After the fight Duran uttered one of his most infamous quotes: "I was not in my best condition. Today I sent him to the hospital. Next time I’ll put him in the morgue.'"
Lampkin spent five days in hospital. With a touch of tenderness Duran made a point of visiting him in the infirmary, planting a kiss on a resting Lampkin’s cheek.
