: Wanted ex-beauty queen surrenders to NDLEA after hiding for 8 months

Aderinoye Queen Christmas, also known as Queen Oluwadamilola Aderinoye, a former beauty queen declared wanted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has surrendered to the Lagos State Command after approximately eight months in hiding.

NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi announced in a statement on Sunday, September 1, 2024, that Aderinoye turned herself in on Wednesday, August 28.

She had been on the run since January 2024, after escaping a raid by anti-narcotic operatives at her residence in the Lekki area of Lagos, following intelligence reports linking her to illicit drug activities.

Aderinoye, who was crowned Miss Commonwealth Nigeria Culture 2015/2016 and is the founder of Queen Christmas Foundation, was reportedly hiding in Akure, Ondo State, since her escape.

During the raid on her home, NDLEA officials, in the presence of estate representatives, recovered 606 grams of Canadian Loud (a synthetic strain of cannabis), an electronic weighing scale, a large quantity of drug packaging materials, a black RAV 4 SUV with Lagos license plates, and other items.

In related developments, NDLEA operatives seized 1,122 kilograms of cannabis from a suspect named Mustapha Ibrahim along Orchid Road in Ajah, Lagos State, on Monday, August 26. An additional 816 kilograms of cannabis, belonging to another suspect still at large, was recovered from the same location.

Responding to these recent seizures and arrests, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He praised the agency’s operatives nationwide for their dedication to both drug demand reduction and drug supply reduction efforts.

Bello Turji: Northern groups back Matawalle’s initiative to deploy military to Sokoto

By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), Northern Awareness Network (NAN) and the North West Solidarity Forum (NWSF) have thrown their weight behind the strategic military deployment proposed by the Defence Minister of State, Bello Mohammed Matawalle which was aimed at relocating military assets to Sokoto State.

The groups said the joint effort was aimed at enhancing the joint military operations against bandits wreaking havoc in Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina and Kebbi States.

They described the initiative as a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat the escalating security challenges inherent in the Northern region.

In a separate statement issued by the President General of the AYCF, Yerima Shettima, Chairman of NAN, Salihu Suleiman and Spokesperson of the NWSF, Tanimu Danlawal, they stated that violence, criminality and insurgency have continued to threaten the safety and socio-economic stability of Northern Nigeria, and therefore recognizes the urgent necessity for decisive action.

According to the groups, the call for an enhanced military presence in Sokoto State is rooted in a broader desire to restore peace and order which are critical components for fostering an environment ripe for development and prosperity.

“Recognizing the challenges posed by persistent violence and crime, the AYCF acknowledges that effective implementation of this military strategy is essential for restoring safety and security. The organization highlights its unwavering support for measures that prioritize the protection of citizens and the stability of communities.”

“We call on the Federal Government to arrest immediately any such voices, whether in the guise of misinformation, dissent, or undue scepticism, and prosecute them appropriately,” they stated.

While emphasizing the importance of a coordinated response to threats against national security, the northern groups underscored that any attempts to obstruct these efforts will not be tolerated.

They urged both governmental and non-governmental organizations to join forces in promoting transparent and effective dialogue to deter divisive narratives and protect initiatives aimed at societal growth and safety.

“We are committed to working alongside government officials, security agencies, and local communities to ensure a safe and secure future for all citizens. We believe that through collaboration and shared commitment, the region can overcome adversities and pave the way for sustainable development, ” the statements added.

The groups reiterated their dedication to working collaboratively with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders to foster a safer Nigeria. “The organization encourages citizens to remain vigilant and supportive of initiatives that serve the greater good of the nation.”

The call for enhanced military engagement in the North must be accompanied by proactive measures to foster public trust. The groups explained that advocating for an inclusive approach where the government transparently communicates the objectives, coordinates dialogues with local stakeholders, and actively addresses community concerns.

They also commended the Minister’s commitment to allocate the necessary resources for the eradication of notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji and his criminal gang. “This decisive action follows the alarming dissemination of videos showing a Nigerian military armoured vehicle immobilized in a waterlogged region of Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. Such bold leadership is both encouraging and reassuring to our communities suffering from the scourge of banditry,” they added.
