Meet the experts: Concrete Production

Dr. Marc Beitzel: Economical and yet efficient mixing technologies

Due to the constantly increasing demands on concrete strength and density or durability, with slimmer components and higher reinforcement density in combination with the saving of labour costs, higher demands on an easier workability of the concrete are also required, which can often be achieved by modified concrete plasticisers with a comparable water content. This is also associated with an increasing shift away from the original maximum grain size of 32 mm to 16 mm for normal concrete and to finer-grained concrete compositions for high-performance and special concretes.
In principle, concrete is regarded as a two-phase system consisting of cement paste and aggregate for fresh concrete and of cement paste and aggregate for hardened concrete. In contrast, in the course of modern building materials technology, concrete is defined as a six-substance system consisting of aggregate, cement, water, admixtures, additives and air. Essentially, the plant systems will be oriented towards the decisive goals of the further concrete technological development of this material.
The economic efficiency of concrete production essentially depends on the production and conveying in the concrete plant as well as the transport and installation on the construction site.
By considering the work process chain, the significant influencing parameters for the production and processing of fresh concrete can be determined:
- Production process
- Transport and conveying process
- Placing and compacting process
- Curing process

Speaker:
Dr. Marc Beitzel, sworn expert in building, civil engineering and construction for the Ministry of Justice of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg; director of Dr. Beitzel Bautechnologie, Ingenieure und Sachverständige für effizientes Bauen und Sanieren, mit integriertes Institut für Bauverfahrens- und Umwelwel Dr. Beitzel Bautechnologie, Ingenieure und Sachverständige für effizientes Bauen und Sanieren, mit integriertes Institut für Bauverfahrens- und Umwelttechnik (IBU); lecturer at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) for mixing, transport, processing and after-treatment of concrete; Diploma and doctorate at the KIT; many years of responsibility in the construction industry; management of national and international construction projects as well as research and development projects in the field of mechanical concrete construction.

Mr. Saïd Bouanani: Approaches and funding for R&D and innovation in the Moroccan concrete industry

The Moroccan concrete industry has to cope with increasingly high input costs, the depletion of natural resources and the ever more pressing demands of sustainable construction.
It will also be called upon to play an active role in the industrialisation of the construction sector by meeting the needs of the public works sector in terms of quantity, quality and deadlines, while at the same time improving its carbon footprint. To meet these enormous challenges, the sector needs to invest more, and now, in Research and Innovation to move towards new choices of raw materials, product characteristics, packaging and production processes.
This is the theme of CETEMCO's presentation. A number of approaches and tools will be presented to help concrete manufacturers initiate innovation in their companies. They will be told about CETEMCO's technical resources and capabilities and the possibilities offered by the public fund (FACET) for financing collective, private and partnership projects. They will also be introduced to the direct financing mechanism provided by the Ministry of Industry and Trade as part of the 300 MDh annual programme to support industrial innovation.

Speaker:Said Bouanani, Managing Director of CETEMCO, MoroccoWith a doctorate in science and an engineering degree from the Institut Polytechnique de Toulouse in France, he began his career in industry in France and then in Morocco. He also has experience in higher education, first as a professor at the Ecole d'Ingénieurs des Mines in Rabat and then as director of the Ecole Supérieure de Technologie Appliquée in Mohammadia. He also worked as an international consultant in the field of energy efficiency and environmental protection for international organisations such as USAID, UNDP, UNIDO and GIZ before joining CETEMCO in 1997.

Dr. Kais Mehiri: Abilys – new generation of diagnostic tool for concrete block production

The Abilys intelligent board has proved, and continues to prove, its effectiveness in diagnosing, improving and monitoring the production of all products manufactured on a vibrating press. Combined with CERIB's expertise, we have passed the mark of 100 vibratory presses diagnosed in mainland France and overseas.
Feedback from the industry has been extremely positive, with a 1% reduction in the scrap rate after intervention and a 10% gain in cycle times and therefore productivity.
Our discussions with manufacturers about this new technology have led us to develop a wireless technology to make it even easier to carry out checks via Abilys, but also to give manufacturers greater autonomy by having a board on site that they can use as and when they need it.

Speaker:
Dr. Kais Mehiri
obtained a PhD in Materials Engineering. After two years of teaching at the National Engineering School of Metz, he joined the CERIB in 2009. Currently he is responsible for the Innovation and Industrialisation Department and tasked with supporting CERIB's desire to assist the precast concrete industry to innovate, improve and optimize manufacturing processes.

Ms. Amal El Abdi Alaoui: Industrial concrete solutions to improve energy efficiency in buildings

Morocco is facing major energy challenges. On the one hand, it is dependent on foreign energy sources, which account for more than 90% of imported energy, and energy prices fluctuate significantly; on the other hand, energy demand is growing by 4% a year. The building sector is one of the most energy-intensive sectors in Morocco, accounting for up to 33% of energy consumption.
The application of the RTCM is a major challenge for reducing the energy bill in the building sector. However, the insulation market is developing, but is still dominated by products other than concrete products or solutions. As a result, it is becoming necessary, not to say essential, for the concrete industry to position itself in this market and contribute to the development of new high-performance, sustainable and competitive solutions that will best meet future trends and requirements in this field.

Speaker:
Ms. Amal El Abdi Alaoui, Head of technical offers development department at LafargeHolcim Maroc
21 years' experience in the construction and public works sector, with a Master's degree specialising in mechanics and an Executive MBA from emlyon business school. Currently development and marketing manager for the industry segment at LafargeHolcim Morocco, and project manager for energy efficiency in buildings at LafargeHolcim Morocco.

Mr. Mohamed Louardi: Vibration at the heart of manufacturing standards

During the presentation the following topics will be discussed:
The impact of vibration on the optimization of formwork filling: vibration allows optimal formwork filling. The frequency and duration of vibration must be adapted to the composition of the concrete and the characteristics of the structure.
The impact of the vibration on the compactness of the concrete ensured by the release of the occluded air: a good vibration allows a better installation in the formwork, a complete filling of the formwork and the moulds, a perfect coating of the reinforcements and optimal adhesion between concrete and reinforcement.
The effects of vibration on the improved properties of hardened concrete: higher compactness and density, improved mechanical characteristics, reduced porosity, better homogeneity, reduced shrinkage, effective coating and adhesion of reinforcement, increased durability and improved surface appearance.
The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate that the absence or lack of vibration, but also the excess of vibration have harmful consequences on the resistance of concrete and the aesthetics of facings.

Innovative precast concrete manufacturing

Mr. Thomas Friedrich: Mobile prestressing bed for the production of prestressed ceiling elements on existing production tables

The production of prefabricated floor slabs usually takes place in a circulation system or on stationary production tables. As these components are untensioned, the performance of the floor elements remains limited. However, with a prestressed reinforcement, further application possibilities open up. The advantages such as slender, resolved cross-sections and the associated CO2 reduction are optimally achieved with a prestressed reinforcement.

Traditionally, the prestressing in the prestressing bed is based on a more or less long prestressing line with large abutment constructions on both sides. Such devices are usually designed for wide-span downstand beams or at best for double tee slabs. Due to the two different processes, the use of a pretensioned prestressing on tables for floor slab production is currently ruled out.

Since prestressed, prefabricated floor slabs will play a greater role in the future due to their properties, the aim is to expand existing tables for the production of floor elements to include the option of a prestressing bed. This technique is made possible with the help of a mobile prestressing bed.

The presentation reports on the practical experience with a mobile prestressing bed in various precast plants. The structure and function of the mobile prestressing bed are shown. The production of prestressed floor slabs of all types and of slender downstand beams is reported. The benefits of prefabricated and prestressed floor slabs are also reported.

Speaker:
Dipl.-Eng. Thomas Friedrich, Innogration GmbH, Bernkastel-Kues, Germany studied civil engineering at RWTH Aachen University and at ETH Zurich with a scholarship from The German National Academic Foundation. His activities have included: project engineer at Stahlton/BBR, a prestressing company in Zurich; managing director of Domostatik, an engineering company he founded in 1988. From 2003 onwards, he has been engaged in developing a new type of prefabricated floor system with integrated technical building services. Proprietor of numerous patents for newly developed products in the construction sector, he founded Innogration GmbH in 2010 for the advanced development and marketing of this new multi-functional floor system; he is managing partner of Innogration GmbH. He has been lecturer at the special department of solid construction at Kaiserslautern University of Technology since 2008.

Mr. Mohammed Sonebi: Bio-based concrete compositions - a chance for the concrete industry in North Africa

Construction remains a significant consumer of raw materials, specifically non-renewable resources derived from the extractive industries. In addition, construction is a significant contributor to the emission of global warming gases, both through its dependence on the extractive industries, and its consumption of energy during and after construction. Natural fibres have gained interest as reinforcing materials in the composite industry for low-cost housings. Their advantages have been increasingly recognised as a major motivation to be more environmentally friendly, cost-efficiency, renewable, and good thermal conductivity and acoustic. Bio-based concrete is a natural, “better-than-zero-carbon” material. This means that more atmospheric carbon is locked away in the material for the lifetime of the building than was used in its production and use.
The building industry has thus been called to account for its role in the massive use of mineral raw materials and environmental pollution. One solution comes from the bio-based building sector which draws on unlimited sources of natural materials such as natural fibres, which is a recyclable carbon sequestrator. Fibres can be made from flax, h**p, jute, palm, sisal, cotton, wheat, corn, ...

Meet the experts:

Dr. İsmail Özgür Yaman: Roller compacted concrete pavements: Best practice in Turkey

Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is a zero-slump concrete consisting of densely graded aggregates, cement and water, i.e. with the basic ingredients of concrete. Because of its poor workability, however, it is usually placed with conventional or high-density asphalt paving equipment and compacted by vibrating rollers. RCC pavements (RCCP) need neither forms nor finishing, nor do they contain dowels or steel reinforcing. Therefore, RCCP is considered as an economic alternative road construction technology, and it owes much of its economy to high-volume and high-speed construction methods. RCC pavements are used in a variety of applications, ranging from provincial roads to industrial warehouses carrying heavy traffic. In Turkiye, the first RCCP application was in 2009 as a pilot study. Because of the aforementioned characteristics and the economy provided, it has now been utilized in over 60 cities with over 3500+ km of provincial road paving. This presentation will explain the basics of RCC paving and the path followed for its widespread use in Turkiye.

Speaker:
Dr. Ismail Ozgur Yaman
received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Department of Civil Engineering at METU in 1993 and 1995, and earned his PhD in 2000 at Wayne State University, USA, with his work on the simulation of ultrasonic testing of concrete. He has been continuing his academic activities at METU Department of Civil Engineering since 2003. Dr. Yaman's main research topics include the use of non-destructive testing methods in concrete; developments in cement and concrete technology. For the last ten years his focus is on concrete road construction technologies. Having over 100 national and international publications on these subjects, Dr. Yaman held various positions in international institutions such as TRB and EUPAVE, as well as national professional and research institutions such as IMO, TÜBİTAK, TÜRKÇİMENTO and THBB.

The modern production of various types of concrete, including concrete roads, roller compacting concrete, ready-mix concrete, etc. faces the requirements of having a complex set of properties of concrete. Preferences are given to materials, both involving various industrial by-products, such as fly ash, slag, etc., and based on local raw materials. Since non-linear dependencies interconnect the final properties and proportions of all raw components, it is not a trivial task to find the desired composition of concrete using simple combinatorial methods. Given this, the problem of developing methods for determining concrete composition based on simple quantitative characteristics of raw materials is relevant now. In our work, we present a novel method involving the initial characterization of raw materials, design of auxiliary experiments and machine learning based data post-processing techniques. Packing density optimization is the main build block of the final mix design strategy. Latent information about the raw materials properties and physical and chemical processes in mixes is involved through an auxiliary set of coefficients. The quantitative values of which are determined based on Bayesian statistics. The results obtained make it possible to create a low-labor experimental plan for solving the problem of multiobjective optimization and obtain concrete compositions with the required set of properties. Specific examples demonstrate the practical use of the proposed methods with ready-to-use tools.
