LISA SEEBACH. EARTHY LIQUIDS AND HEAVY METAL [HYPERSLEEP]
Abstract and mysterious, Lisa Seebach’s (b. 1981) sculptures are reminiscent of industrial objects like gas cylinders or oil drums, which she transforms into autonomous actors in a poetically enigmatic staging filled with associative meta-narratives. In the labyrinth of post-apocalyptic science fiction, dark utopia, and post-human aesthetics, they point to potential threats in the face of dystopian escalation and explore ways of escaping them. “Earthy Liquids and Heavy Metal [Hypersleep]” is Lisa Seebach’s largest solo museum exhibition to date and shows numerous works from the last ten years alongside works specially conceived for the exhibition space at the Lechner Museum. The publication of the same name brings together numerous images of the installation and accompanying texts.
The exhibition is on view until 9 March 2025.
Lisa Seebach will present her book 21 November, 8 pm , Berlin.

ELGER ESSER. DIE ENGEN WASSER
Elger Esser (b. 1967) works mainly in the medium of photography and is one of the most important members of the Becher School from Dusseldorf. From early in his career, he explored historic landscape photography, which has had, and continues to have, a huge influence on his work. For the most part, the analog images that he subsequently subjects to further processing, are taken by the sea or by rivers, most of them in France. Often, his images are dominated by imposing cloud formations. “Elger Esser. The Narrow Waters” presents more than sixty depictions of river landscapes created by Esser over the last twenty-five years. Again and again, the artist traces the literary trail of famous writers such as Proust, Maupassant, and Flaubert. Several of the images show the Èvre, a tributary of the Loire, which French author Julien Gracq (1910-2007) described in his essay collection The Narrow Waters. Selected passages from his writings are presented alongside Essers’ post-romantic landscapes.
The exhibition is on view at Haus Beda Bitburg until 12 January 2025.

MATTHIAS FORSTER. METROPOLIS SUNDAY. HONG KONG SERIES
„Metropolis Sunday“ by Matthias Forster takes the audience on an expedition behind the gleaming skyscrapers of Hong Kong. The photographer finds the light in the darkness, the beauty in the unsightly, and the divine in the mundane. Metropolis, the mother city, is the epitome of a cosmopolitan city. Sunday is the day of rest par excellence. Forster’s images reveal the opposite poles of a hectic and stimulus-laden society. Away from the noise of the congested streets, almost deserted squares are revealed. Here, the city takes a breath and comes to rest. Space and time become relative.
The iconic high-rise buildings with their smooth-as-glass façades serve as a mirror image of modern urban society: while their impressive exterior extols orderliness and precision, behind it, the informality and improvisation of urban life emerge in countless permutations.

📚Rainer Zerback. The World Without Us
What would happen if humankind were to disappear? What would planet earth look like without us? In his monograph “The World Without Us”, Rainer Zerback shows us such a world—in quiet images, shimmering with heat but without any trace of apocalyptic bluster.

📚Piet Niemann. Expo 2000 – 20 Years Later
Piet Niemann revisited the Expo site and documented its current state in a comprehensive body of work, twenty years after the world fair took place. Sustainability and the successful development of the exhibition site into a “city of the future” are often promised by politicians. The documentary work enables a reflective view of the past, and ideally initiates reflection on responsible action in the future.

Book Presentation and Artist Talk
Dieter Mammel. LIFELINE

September 14, 2024, 6 p.m.
Kerber Verlag
Rudi-Dutschke-Straße 26
10969 Berlin
We are pleased to invite you to a book presentation and artist talk with Dieter Mammel and Tamás Szalay, director of .ulm.

In 2015, Dieter Mammel witnessed the arrival of the first Syrian refugees on the Greek island of Kos. In the years that followed, the Berlin-based painter explored the story of his own family’s flight, the sense of displacement that came with it, and the new beginning in another country. The exhibition tour LIFELINE, which traces the course of the family’s life, with the accompanying catalogue shows the pictures created as part of this exploration and examines the themes of origin, flight, and memory as timeless constants of human experience.

XU YONG. HUTONG 101 PHOTOS
Xu Yong (b. 1954, Shanghai) was one of the first photographers to focus on everyday life in modern China, free from political romanticization or ideological whitewashing. In Hutong 101 Photos, he traces the history of the traditional residential district of Beijing, with its centuries-old buildings complete with rear courtyards and myriad narrow alleyways, the “Hutongs.” Many of these neighborhoods have since fallen victim to radical redevelopment and have been demolished. Xu Yong’s black-and-white images dating from 1989 bear witness to the rise and fall, the heyday and the decline, of the Hutongs—against the backdrop of the rapid societal change in China that followed the end of the Qing Dynasty. In this milestone of Chinese photography, which is now finally being published as a new edition in book form, Xu Yong has created an elegiac tribute to the old alleyways of Beijing, revealing both their poetic beauty and the sadness surrounding their demise.

KAREN IRMER. STATE OF CHANGE
The publication “State of Change” provides an overview of the artistic work of Karen Irmer. In her photographs and film installations, which are as poetic as they are analytical, Irmer reflects upon the relationship between illusion and reality, but also between the artwork and the viewer. Her work is characterized by atmospheric moods and pared-back visual language. The recurrent subject is landscape, in which she seeks contemplation and immersion – as an alternative to the overstimulated reality of modern life, in which it often appears these things are no longer possible.

JAANA CASPARY. UMFORMUNG
“umformung” is the first comprehensive monograph on the work of the Wuppertal-based sculptor Jaana Caspary (b. 1988), whose abstract, monochrome sculptures made of cast acrylic resin, stone, or bronze have been causing a furor for several years now. Many of these sculptures, which are often accompanied by colored pencil drawings and photomontages, are characterized by the referencing of several related basic forms, each elaborate in itself. Jaana Caspary visualizes the presence of such modules in collective everyday life, but also in nature, repeatedly demonstrating the rich variety and complexity of their meanings.
With a particular focus on the most recent exhibitions, “umformung” presents the most important groups of works and key pieces from Caspary’s oeuvre of the last ten years.

We are pleased to announce that Wolfgang Strassl’s series “Underground Portraits” will be presented at , London.
Dates: Thursday 4th July – Sunday 7th July 2024
Location: 4 Leonard Circus, London, Shoreditch, London EC2A 4DQ
Despite a population of 9 million inhabitants, London is not even among the top 30 most populous cities in the world, yet it is often considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan capitals. This is vividly reflected in its public transport system, and especially the London Underground – commonly referred to as ‘the Tube’ – on which over 3 million journeys are made every day and where people of different ages, genders, social classes, faiths, ethnicities, nationalities and sexual orientations sit and stand in close proximity to each other, coexisting in both their similarity and diversity all at once.
In a response to this multicultural urban phenomenon, the photographer Wolfgang Strassl has created a series of unique portraits of his fellow passengers on the London Underground, in which he chooses to focus not on their faces, but on their bodies.
‘Strassl’s gaze directed at the passengers on the London Underground may, at first, appear quite intrusive – voyeuristic even – but his gaze is deeply humanistic. His portraits speak to that most common human characteristic, inquisitiveness. He is chiefly motivated by examining what makes us human, how we respond to our environments and how we, ultimately, shape them and how we shape each other,’ says the curator, Kasia Kowalska.

MONIKA GRZYMALA & KATHARINA HINSBERG. BETWEEN ONE LINE
The shared medium of Katharina Hinsberg and Monika Grzymala is drawing. The exploration of the line is central to the work of both artists. Many of these artworks transcend the traditional boundaries of the genre and, in their dynamic reach, take on an almost sculptural quality. While Katharina Hinsberg’s lines dissect space with meticulous clarity, Monika Grzymala’s imposing bundles of lines pe*****te space with an eruptive power. The two artistic approaches are being shown together for the first time in the joint exhibition “Between One Line” at the Kunsthalle Mannheim.
The accompanying catalogue was created through an ongoing dialogue between the two artists. Two sketchbooks formed the basis; the artists worked in them alternately, each visually “interrupting” one another, constantly striving to confront their colleague’s preliminary drawing work with their own understanding of the line, and exploring their artistic potential through a collaborative practice.
