Euronews explores how the success of the JIC business hub helped reinvent Brno from a former textile city, into an innovation ecosystem

Brno was once famous for its textile industry. But its subsequent decline in the late 20th century meant the Czech Republic’s second-largest city had to reinvent itself.

Twenty years ago, a new business hub was set up in Brno. JIC (the South Moravian Innovation Centre) was one of the first technological incubators in the eastern part of the European Union.

Today, its success has made it a magnet for entrepreneurs and companies with an international perspective.

TGV's new, greener trains are set to launch in France in 2024.

SNCF's new high speed, low carbon train is preparing for its 2024 launch far from the passengers it will serve.

After unveiling the ‘TGV of the future’ late last year, French train manufacturer Alstom has begun testing the TGV M - also known as the Avelia Horizon - on a circuit in the Czech Republic.

The double-decker train has 740 seats, up from TGV’s current maximum of 634 - a 20 per cent increase in capacity.

Pensions have already been altered. They were index linked, meaning that they had been keeping up with the high rate of inflation which in February was at 16.6 percent.

But the government has now limited the rise to just 2.3 percent.

Leaders from opposition parties took part in the demonstration, including Andrej Babis, the populist billionaire chief of the centrist ANO (YES) party, the anti-migrant Direct Democracy Party and the far-left Communist party.

Babis, a former prime minister, called on unions to stage large protests, pledging his support.

The government wants to raise the age from 65 to 68, saying it must rein in spending as there's a huge hole in the budget.

Around 2,000 workers took to the streets of Prague and marched passed the cabinet office on March 29th in protest at a proposed rise in the retirement age.

The Czech government wants to raise the age from 65 to 68, saying it must rein in spending as there's a huge hole in its budget.

If it succeeds it would be set four years higher than France's retirement age where massive nationwide demonstrations against a rise to 64 years turned violent.

Engineers worldwide are working on how to store the energy generated by renewables.

A Czech energy company has been forced to unplug hundreds of solar panels after they generated more power than the grid could handle.

Electricity use was low in the Czech Republic Easter Monday.

But sunny weather meant that the country’s solar plants produced a huge surge of energy.

Thousands of people rallied again in the Czech capital, Prague, on Sunday to protest against high inflation and demand the government’s resignation.

Thousands of people rallied again in the Czech capital, Prague, on Sunday calling on the government to resign as they protested against high inflation and energy prices.

It was the second such rally in the central Wenceslas Square, called for by a new non-parliamentary political party PRO, which in English stands for Law, Respect, and Expertise.

"We want to express our disapproval of this government, of the political situation, of what's going on in the Czech Republic and in fact in the whole of Europe," said one protestor, Renata Urbanova.

Eight people have died in an overnight fire in the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, police said on Thursday.

The fire broke out about two hours after midnight in Brno, located 200 kilometres (125 miles) southeast of Prague.

Police suggested those who died were probably homeless people who were occupying abandoned buildings where a new neighbourhood is expected to be built in the coming years.

The rescuers said they didn't find any injured people. Police and firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze which could take weeks, they said.

West Ham and Fiorentina haven't won a European trophy for more than 50 years.

The drought will end for one of the clubs when they play out the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday in Prague.

Thousands of fans from both sides have descended on the Czech capital. Only 6,000 tickets were reserved for supporters of the Hammers and La Viola, the rest of Eden Arena's 19,000-person capacity will be used by UEFA for its needs.
