The most vital and critical part is the ensure all persons are in SCBA whenever anywhere near it, and ensure all gear is decon’ed and bagged and tagged at the scene.
DO NOT LET ANYONE
take their gear back with them in the truck cab or in their personal vehicle it they were in the smoke/vapour/fumes!!!!!
🚗⚡ ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) FIREFIGHTING HAZARDS
EV fires are different—not impossible. But they demand different tactics, patience, and scene control.
🔥 What makes EV fires challenging
• High-voltage systems create electrical and shock hazards
• Lithium-ion batteries can release toxic and flammable gases
• Battery damage or overheating can trigger thermal runaway
• Fires can reignite hours or even days later
• Battery packs may take 12–24+ hours to fully cool
⚠️ Thermal runaway is a chain reaction inside the battery. It’s not an explosion—but it can be violent and unpredictable.
💧 Water use matters
Large volumes of water are often needed for cooling, not instant extinguishment. Cooling removes heat and helps stop the chain reaction.
🚫 EV fires do not burn “without oxygen.” Oxygen is produced internally during battery breakdown—cooling is critical.
🧠 Fireground takeaway
Identify early. Secure and isolate. Cool aggressively when needed.
Expect re-ignition. Protect crews first.
Different fire. Different hazards. Same mission.
