PRESS RELEASE
PROPOSED STRIKE ACTION: NPF URGES ORGANIZED LABOUR TO SHELVE STRIKE, COMPLY WITH LEGAL PROCEDURES TO PREVENT BREAKDOWN OF LAW, ORDER

The Nigeria Police Force, while acknowledging the recent announcement by organized labour regarding the intention to embark on a nationwide strike action and understanding the right of organized labour to engage in such actions to advocate for the interests of all workers, wishes to emphasize the importance of adherence to the existing laws governing such activities; and calls for caution to prevent a breakdown of law and order within the country.

In light of the Federal Government's recent declaration that the planned strike is illegal and premature, the Nigeria Police Force views this action as a potential catalyst for increased tension and political instability.

The NPF hereby urges organized labour to proceed with the ongoing deliberations at the Tripartite Committee, which is focused on determining a new minimum wage, and shelve the planned strike as such decision is essential to prevent untold hardships on members of the public and maintain order and stability within our country.

The Nigeria Police Force assures the public that ample deployments have been made across the country to ensure that citizens can go about their lawful duties without hindrance. Therefore, all members of the public are encouraged to remain calm and continue with their lawful daily activities, while organized labour is urged to act responsibly and in accordance with the law, prioritizing dialogue and legal avenues to resolving the existing grievances.

Breaking: Mr Ibu is dead.

“I announce with a deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn't make it. May his soul rest in peace.”

Veteran actor, John Okafor, known as Mr Ibu, died at age 62.

Mr Ibu died on Saturday at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos State, Nigeria.

News of his death filtered in on Saturday evening, but the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, would later confirm it on his official social media handles.

“I announce with a deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it. May his soul rest in peace,” Mr Rollas wrote.

Background
The late actor battled with clotting of blood in his leg, stemming from diseased blood vessels and other strange illnesses for months, which led to the amputation of the affected leg.

On 18 October 2023, PREMIUM TIMES reported that Mr Ibu cried out on his Instagram page to solicit prayers and financial assistance from his fans.

Several people donated for the ailing actor, including the Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Foundation which paid all of Mr Ibu’s medical expenses.

But on 6 November 2023, Mr Ibu’s family announced that one of the actor’s legs was amputated after undergoing seven surgeries.

Also, on 17 December 2023, the family said the actor was unable to fly overseas for the additional therapy because doctors deemed him ‘Not Fit to Fly.’

This, the family said, nullified his treatment overseas because it was challenging due to the airlines’ refusal to fly him.

The late Mr Ibu returned home a month after his family announced his recovery at one of Nigeria’s largest and finest hospitals
On 22 January 2024, his colleague actor, Ken Erics, visited him. He shared an exciting video of both of them on his Instagram page.

In the video, Mr Ibu sat in the living room wearing a burnt orange Jalabiya (a flowing robe-like Islamic attire) and chatting with his junior colleague.

South Africa: We are still trying to persuade Putin not to come

Deputy President Paul Mashatile says the government is still trying to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin not to attend the next month's BRICS summit.

As a signatory to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which has issued a warrant for his arrest, SA is obliged to arrest Putin, should he come to SA. But this is an unthinkable proposition for the government, as the government invited him.

"It's a big dilemma for us. Of course, we cannot arrest him. It's almost like you invite your friend to your house, and then arrest them. That's why for us, his not coming is the best solution.

"The Russians are not happy, though. They want him to come," he said in an interview in Johannesburg on Friday.

Mashatile was tasked with dealing with the dilemma by President Cyril Ramaphosa, and proposed three options, none of which have been accepted by all the BRICS partners. These included relocating the summit to China, Putin not attending but sending his foreign minister in his place, and holding a virtual summit.

Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Naledi Pandor confirmed last week that the BRICS summit will be held in SA.

Mashatile said that no decision had been taken to uninvite Putin, and the strategy remained one of persuasion until Ramaphosa met him in Russia at the end of July. Uninviting him was tricky as Russia had been an original member of BRICS while SA joined later, he said.

UK visa fees and the so-called immigration health surcharge are set to increase significantly. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the price hike will raise funds for public workers. The announcement comes a few weeks after the United States said it was increasing fees for processing non-immigrant visa applications. The new US visa fees will come into effect on Monday, and the UK is expected to announce a date for the new fees soon. What do you make of that increase in visa fees by both the UK and the US?
