Gli Illiri erano un popolo antico, che abitava le sponde dell’Adriatico e i Balcani occidentali già dal II millennio a.C. La loro provenienza è ancora oggi un mistero, ma gli storici li collocano come discendenti di antiche tribù indoeuropee giunte in Europa molto prima dei Greci e dei Romani. Vivevano tra montagne aspre, valli profonde e coste frastagliate, un ambiente che forgiò il loro carattere duro e indipendente. La leggenda narra che discendessero da Illirio, figlio di Cadmo e Armonia, un mito che dava nobiltà e antichità alla loro stirpe. Gli Illiri non erano un popolo unito, ma un mosaico di tribù, ciascuna con un capo e una propria identità. Questa frammentazione fu la loro forza e la loro debolezza.
