The Gold Paradox: Why Do Mining Communities Remain Poor?

Have you ever wondered why gold miners and their communities live in poverty despite the high value of gold? Why does wealth from such a precious resource rarely benefit the people who work closest to it?

These are tough questions that demand honest conversations. Who is truly responsible for this imbalance—and what can be done to rewrite the narrative?

Years ago, I asked myself the same questions but had no clear path forward. That changed when I encountered CAMYOSFOP, an organization that not only sheds light on these issues but also creates space for your voice and input.

As part of the team, I have the privilege of contributing through capturing images and editing stories that highlight both the challenges and opportunities around gold mining. This work is deeply personal and meaningful to me—it’s about sparking awareness, dialogue, and ultimately, change.

Now it’s your turn. What do you think should be done to ensure gold mining benefits local communities? Your thoughts could inspire new solutions.

Explore the hidden environmental costs of gold mining and its impact on climate change in this insightful piece by Ngalim Eugine Nyuydine, Executive Director...

Building Brighter Futures: An Update on CAMYOSFOP's WASH Initiative. We are making a significant impact!

Over the past four months, I’ve been profoundly grateful to contribute to CAMYOSFOP's mission of improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) across five regions of Cameroon: North West, South West, Centre, Littoral, and West. Our latest project, "Restoring the Dignity of Internally Displaced Women and Girls from the North West and South West of Cameroon through the Provision of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in a Humanitarian Response Context", focuses on supporting vulnerable women and girls in these communities.

We’ve reached several key milestones, including:

Producing four documentary spots.

Designing and distributing project flyers.

Launching our project website: www.camyosfop.org

Creating a YouTube channel to host our video content. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFtmS8w0ylI

Successfully hosted our first side event on March 12, 2025, at the Church Center, opposite the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA.

None of this would have been possible without the invaluable support of our partners: ACAHIJEC, the African Union (AU), ECOSOCC, UN Women, World Vision, and MINPROFF.

As someone with a background in motion pictures, I’ve had the privilege of using my skills to raise awareness about the WASH Project. I’ve been responsible for creating engaging social media video content that resonates with audiences and helping CAMYOSFOP build meaningful connections with individuals and organizations who have become our valued partners and donors. Additionally, I’ve launched and managed CAMYOSFOP's YouTube channel, where I regularly upload videos for public engagement. I’ve also actively participated in team strategy sessions and meetings to ensure the success of our events.

This initiative holds a special place in my heart, as I grew up in this community and witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). Believing that access to clean water is a fundamental right, I am honored to work alongside a dedicated team committed to creating a fairer, more equitable world.
