HEALTH

The Fundong District Hospital ( F.D.H ) has today Thursday November 14th joint the rest of the country and the World 🌎 at large in commemorating World diabetes day celebrated every year on the 14th of November under the theme " Diabetes and Well-being "
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. And overtime, it can damage blood vessels in the heart, eyes, kidneys and nerves causing blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin while Type 2 diabetes affects how one's body uses sugar or glucose for energy. It stops the body from using insulin properly which can lead to high levels of blood sugar if not treated. Gestational diabetes which occurs during pregnancy is hyper-glycaemia with blood glucose values above normal but below those diagnostic of diabetes.
Symptoms of diabetes include feeling thirsty, needing to urinate more often than usual, blurred vision, feeling tired and losing weight unintentionally.
A healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding to***co use are ways to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with diet, medication, physical activity and regular screening and treatment for complications.
Here in Fundong, activities marking the celebration of World 🌎 Diabetes day included rich Health talks on the aforementioned conditions of diabetes which centered around putting one's well-being at the heart of diabetes care and a sensitization march pass on diabetes from the Fundong District Hospital to the Fundong Grandstand, Market , park and back to the Hospital. Free screening for diabetes started at the Fundong District Hospital on the 11th of November 2024 and is expected to end on the 17th of November 2024.
