NEWS ALERT
Press and Associates, NDEFCAM Radio.
Senegal just held a presidential election, and on Tuesday, April 2, a younger 44-year-old president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, was installed in replacement of a much older incumbent Macky Sall. From its first president, Leopold Sedar Senghor, to current president Faye, Senegal has somehow managed to hold together its democratic credentials among French speaking African countries. In matters of democracy, the country has been a beacon of hope, but there have also been some disturbing trends for the country and by extension for the continent.
So, on Saturday, April 6, this week, Press and Associates, NDEFCAM Radio, Bamenda, talks to Dr Goddy Gham, a historian and specialist in international affairs.
First, we ask Dr. Gham, what sense he makes of the peaceful transfer of power in the Senegal election, especially in the context of the youthful energy of civil society protests and the violent government crackdown that preceded it.
Next, we ask him how this youthful civilian energy in Senegal that forced through a generational change in government relates to other recent generational changes in governments through coup d'etats by young military officers in Niger, Burkina Faso and Gabon. Is this trend likely to continue, or will it fizzle out?
Moreover, as former French colonies, the young leaders aren't shy about their rapprochement towards Russia, so we ask our guest about the kind of geopolitical realignment taking place in the region and the consequences of the obvious involvement of major world powers.
Riding to power on the high waves of current anti-French sentiments in Africa, the new leaders in their promises have not disappointed populist expectations, reason why we ask Dr. Gham to read for our listeners any signposts of genuine hope for the continent or indications that we are once again witnessing another false dawn.
Finally, we look at how this Senegalese election, the peaceful transfer of power, especially from the incumbent to an opposition party, speaks to Cameroon and the rest of the Central African sub region
