Njikum Musa's Tribute: Praise for Government's Agricultural Initiatives

Hon. Njingum Musa MP Ngoketunjia' passionate speech during Minister Mbairobe's visit to Ngoketunjia still resonates in the minds of many. As he praised the government's efforts to support rice farmers, his joy and gratitude were palpable.

The minister's visit was a significant milestone in the region's agricultural development. The handing over of essential rice farming inputs and machinery to farmers marked a new chapter in the region's quest for self-sufficiency in rice production.

The most striking thing was Hon. Njingum Musa MP Ngoketunjia's heartfelt appeal to the population of his constituency and separatist fighters in the area. His words were laced with a deep sense of responsibility and a genuine desire to see his people prosper.

Listening to his speech, many couldn't help but feel a sense of hope for Cameroon's rice sector. For too long, the country has relied heavily on imported rice, but with the government's support and initiatives like the one launched during Minister Mbairobe's visit, there's a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

Good News for Rice Farmers in Cameroon!

In a move to boost rice production and improve the livelihoods of farmers, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe, recently visited the North West Region of Cameroon. During his two-day visit, which took place from January 16 to 17, 2025, the minister handed over essential rice farming inputs and machinery to farmers in the region.

The visit was a huge success, with rice farmers cooperatives in Ndop at the Upper Noun Valley Authority UNVDA receiving farm inputs, including fertilizer, herbicides, and small farm equipment. The minister also launched a mechanization program, which includes combined harvesters, tractors, and wind rollers, to increase rice production and productivity.

According to the minister, the government has put in place measures to increase rice production in the region, including the development of over 2,000 hectares of land for irrigated rice production. A modernized rice mill is also being planned for the region.

The General Manager of UNVDA, Eric Adangfung, expressed his gratitude for the support, stating that the new equipment will help improve the quality and quantity of rice produced in the region.

The visit was also attended by the Governor of the North West Region, Adolf Lele, and other dignitaries. The farmers and local authorities praised the government's efforts to support the agricultural sector and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

This development is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and contribute to the government's goal of achieving food security, import substitution while encouraging local rice production and improving the standard of living of the population.

His dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable communities has left an indelible mark on the region.

As the CEO of SHUMAS, Ndzerem oversaw numerous initiatives in education, health, agriculture, and environment. His organization's humanitarian response to the Anglophone crisis has been particularly noteworthy, with over 80% of their budget allocated to this effort. SHUMAS' interventions have spanned various sectors, including water, health, nutrition, protection, and shelter.

DR Congo's Plan to Execute Gang Members Sparks Concerns

The Democratic Republic of Congo's decision to execute over 170 inmates on death row for armed robbery has raised concerns among human rights activists. The inmates, known locally as "Kulunas" or "urban bandits," were flown to a high-security prison in the northern Mongala province, where they will face ex*****on.

While some residents welcome the measure as a means to restore order and security, others fear the risks of abuse and human rights violations. Espoir Muhinuka, a human rights activist, warns of the possibility of extrajudicial ex*****ons and emphasizes the need for strict respect for judicial procedures and fundamental guarantees.

Instead of capital punishment, experts suggest addressing the root causes of crime, such as poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion. Research shows that providing support services and job opportunities can significantly reduce recidivism rates. For instance, a study found that ex-offenders who were referred to employment programs had a significantly lower recidivism rate of 5% compared to those who were not.

Implementing rehabilitation programs that focus on education, job training, and counseling can help gang members reform and reintegrate into society. Engaging with local communities to address social and economic issues can help prevent gang formation and recruitment. Implementing restorative justice programs that focus on repairing harm and promoting healing can help victims and offenders find closure and move forward.

By adopting a more holistic approach to justice, the DR Congo can address the complex issues surrounding gang violence and promote a safer, more equitable society for all.
