Students Exposed to Real-World Medicine at Bamenda Regional Hospital
The Child Care Development Initiative (CCDI) Cameroon, a non-profit organization, recently took a group of medical health sciences students from the Children Professional Holidays Center on a field trip to the Bamenda Regional Hospital. The visit aimed to expose the students to the realities of working in a medical setting, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations.
During the visit, the students were given a tour of the hospital's various units, including the emergency department, ultrasound room, and eye department. Dr. Theodore Tefuh Tebong, who received the students, emphasized the importance of early orientation in helping students make informed decisions about their future careers. "When you start at this stage, you start orienting yourself, and you really go a long way to help them," he said.
Dr. Alfred Wuku Kudi, Director of the Program, highlighted the benefits of exposing students to real-world medical settings. "It's a very good experience for the children, for us to expose them, so that when we want to orientate them, it will be very good for us to give them directives on what to do in life, and they will understand with realities," he explained.
Mme. Nenghabi Miriam, Coordinator of the CCDI Health Department, expressed gratitude to the hospital management for allowing the students to visit. She noted that the students were inquisitive and showed a keen interest in learning, particularly in the ultrasound room. "Some of them were very inquisitive, asking questions about how the ultrasound machine works and what is being used there," she said.
Onlookers were impressed by the students' eagerness to learn. "Many that saw these children were in awe as they wonder at the eagerness in the children who are just between 6 and 18 years old," observers noted, highlighting the potential and enthusiasm of the young students.
The students were impressed by the hospital's facilities and technology. Lobe Ekupajoy, one of the students, was amazed by the advanced equipment but noted that the hospital's wiring system needed improvement. "I've worked and looked at different departments in the hospital, and I was like, wow, Bamenda is very advanced because I've even seen things I've never seen in my life," Ekupa Joy said.
Angwe, a student of engineering, was inspired by the hospital's technology and aspires to create innovative systems. "Coming here to the hospital today was a very big experience for me. I would say from what we have been learning, the different systems we have been looking at in school, it comes to real life, practicals, we see x-ray, radiation, and it inspires me to aspire more," She said.
Another student was fascinated by the eye department and learned about a machine known as the sleep lens. "The most interesting machine I have seen in the regional hospital is the CT scan," the student added.
The visit demonstrates CCDI's commitment to providing students with practical experiences that complement their theoretical knowledge. By exposing students to real-world medical settings, CCD's aim is to better prepare them for their future careers and help them make informed decisions about their professional paths.
