ONE STEP AT A TIME!

CAMEROON'S WIN OVER IVORY COAST: THE SPECIALIST'S VIEW!

Sitting at home last night and watching the Indomitable Lions tackle The Elephants in the battle for Japoma, two things came out quite vividly to the fore: an Ivorian side with an edge and a Cameroonian side with a fighting spirit.

If Andre Onana emerged the MVP, by my assessment, possibly in tandem with the solid, intractable Fai, it was because he did not only demonstrate his sangfroid and omnipresence but over and above all, his show of brilliance and agility when Ivory Coast clicked on the mousse at close range halfway into the game.

3-4 flashes upfront portrayed a nimble-footed Elephants side denied the priceless equalizer. On the other hand, the Lions submerged the pressure and demands from an anxious home setting to score the billion-dollar goal and hold firm to the exigencies of the crucial fixture.

They sent the entire nation emerging with exhilaration with the Ivorians submerging in feats of convulsions...what next? In the battle for Abidjan 16 years ago, the late David Mayebi screamed: 'Mission terminee' as I and Linus announced the end of the game in my historic countdown to the final whistle.

It did turn out to be 'mission terminee' as Cameroon faltered in Yaounde when it mattered most.

After yesterday's herculean achievement, Cameroon will now take on any of Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Nigeria, Senegal for the ultimate visa in a 2-legged campaign.

It is time to remember that each step to the Promised Land is taken one at a time; do not raise hopes and dash them when the prize is most highly awaited.

Remember that it might just have been a coincidence for the playoffs to be scheduled for March 2022, but for all of them still in contention, Shakespeare reminds us of Julius Caesar's Ides of March...
