I know, a good bunch of you have been visiting Georgia in the past or have at least been in touch and supported by labels, formats, radios from there. Maybe you have been reading the odd headline about recent events there, maybe not… well:

What happened/happens in Tbilisi?

As far as i know/could find out:
- on July 5th, the „Pride March“ (a pro-LGBTQ-rights rally) had to be cancelled due to various violent attacks by several homophobic mobs of conservatives and far right people. During these attacks, which have partly been carried out with knives, bludgeons and what not, also an office of co-organisers of „Pride March“ was raided and ravaged.
- not only did clerics of the orthodox church fuel the brutal attacks by preaching an „obligation to be violent“ but some of them even engaged in these personally. That’s your christian values for you… 🤥
- amongst the many victims of said attacks (which include more than 50 journalists) was Aleksandre (Lekso) Lashkarava, a camera man who tried to cover the raids and aggression. He got his head kicked in for several minutes by a furious mob of roughly 20 and was hospitalised with facial bone fractures and contusions. He had to undergo surgery and continued the treatment at home. On July, 11th he was found dead in his apartment.
- in consequence thousands of people assembled in front of the parliament building and called for the governments resignation. A government which failed to keep his people safe and to secure freedom of speech and liberty of the press.
- while some arrests were carried out in the matter, the Interior Ministry of Georgia and police officials claim, Lekso Lashkarava died of an overdose, clearly not taking into account that he received morphine to treat the severe pain following the attack & the surgery.
- instead of condemning these vitriolic attacks, Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili justified them by stating that „95% of the people are against such propagandistic parades“. He even had the effrontery to let out following subtle remark: „The only parade i know, that will be held in our country, is that of our army“, which could well be interpreted as a threat towards future protests and demonstrations.

I asked several friends in Georgia what can be done to help. Shockingly enough not one of them knew of any 100% trustworthy organisation or NGO dealing with that matter. I was asked to spread some information on what had happened, so people know and can get involved. The very few comments and diplomatic reactions show that events like this are still not visible enough. I do not know if this actually helps in the current situation and have no valid info on how this NGO actually works, but for those of you that can/want to help financially maybe this is an idea:
