«I didn’t travel at all last winter. But the stories in this issue sure make me excited to dust off my board bag and start planning my next adventure. From California to Kyrgyzstan, Swiss snowboarders chased deep snow and life changing experiences.
Meanwhile, back at home, our mountains looked a lot different from the 18+ meters of snow that Fredi Kalbermatten and Julien Petry encountered in Tahoe. Many of the lower resorts couldn’t even open for Christmas, and after a colder January, we had more than two months of slush and sun.
That didn’t stop a new crop of local talent from taking to the streets to stack clips for movies like Pachific, Harmony and Bloom. The aesthetic of Swiss snowboard cinema is changing, lead by a new generation that’s not waiting for powder days that may never come. And who can blame them? Would you spend a full day preparing a massive backcountry booter when there’s a 70% chance that the landing will be baked the next morning?
Fortunately, the snow finally arrived in April, and many of us enjoyed our best days of the season, just as our local stations were shutting down. This photo was taken on April 26th, on a beautiful day where we rode lines from 3000m to 1500m in a nearly empty resort. I’m not saying that to brag. I only hope to encourage you not to despair if the weather isn’t always on your side. The winter is long and there are just so many opportunities to fall in love with snowboarding. From splitboards to sidehits, from alpinism to air-time, from concrete ledges to cultural exchanges, snowboarding has it all — and so does this magazine. Enjoy!»
