The de–design cube, like the legendary Rubik’s Cube, is also a true marvel. By rotating the six sides of the puzzle, an almost limitless range of compositions of symbols, forms and motifs can be generated, for each of its 24 surfaces is designed with a distinct graphic motif. The cube can therefore serve as a source of inspiration for graphic artists, designers, and architects, while children at play are imbued with an understanding of the construction of forms and and taught hand-eye coordination.
The ability to construct, deconstruct and create attests to the cognitive skills of the user. In this game of creation the most diverse artistic influences come together. The clear contours and graphic characteristics of typography are expressed in the form of the three basic geometric forms: square, circle and triangle.

The Olympic Games have been always "a sort of Design Games" says designer Erik Spiekermann (video of the #kickstartercampaign #2019)
OLYMPIC GAMES – THE DESIGN. From Athens 1896 to Tokyo 2020. The first and only book featuring the identity of every Olympic Games.
You might love the London 2012 dynamic pictograms or the Munich ’72 rainbow colors, the Tokyo ’64 minimalist logo, the Mexico ’68 all-over stripes, the Los Angeles ’84 confetti look or the Lillehammer ’94 local approach.
When was the first logo, the first pictogram, the first design manual?
Each edition of the Olympic Games has a unique identity and many of its design elements have been carried forward. As a matter of fact, some of these identities have been a great challenge for designers, but even more, they have marked milestones in the development of corporate design.

The Olympic Games #Paris2024 are coming. What about the identity. Do you like it?
"Olympic Games - The Design" by Markus Osterwald explores all the identities of the Games since 1896.
Is there a bigger challenge for a designer than the creation of an identity for the Olympic Games? Each venue has developed its own unique image, merging national spirit and international trends with the Olympic spirit of friendship, solidarity and fairness. Olympic Games – The Design provides an in-depth overview of the history of the Games, with for the first time the visual appearance at the forefront: logos, mascots, medals, pictograms, uniforms, tickets, luggage tags, posters, souvenirs and much more. The author Markus Osterwalder presents a total of around 6,000 illustrations on over 1,500 pages in two volumes with 58 chapters including astonishing facts and stories about who created what and how. For each of the Games, the passionate Swiss collector has systematically chosen examples from the fields of graphic design, typography, fashion and product design that enable viewers and readers to fully grasp the design identity of the respective Games. In addition, this title shows the exciting development in the field of corporate identity and brand design.

Paul Schatz (1898-1979) spent much of his life developing a theory of movement that proved to be useful to today’s mechanical engineering sector. He worked on the inversion of geometric objects and discovered a new form in 1930: the oloid. It does not exist in nature, but is produced by inverting a cube. Since then, the oloid has existed in many fascinating varieties, such as the ISO_PAUL and FLOYD lamps, as table-top toys or as sculptures.
From a technical perspective, Paul Schatz’s research results are very innovative to this day. The Oloid is the only form that develops its entire surface while rolling, doing so in a rhythmical movement. When used in water for instance, it can achieve a very high circulation despite its small size. The result is greater efficiency with less effort, with potential for environmentally friendly water cleansing, the fast mixing of substances, and greener propulsion for water vehicles. The first commercial product on the market was the Turbula in 1941. The oloid finally was patented for technical applications in 1968 after many years of further experimentations.
All developments based on the oloid are the result of its inventor’s holistic approach, with wide-ranging insight and interest in aspects of mathematics and geometry, astronomy, art, and spirituality.

Emil Ruder
–
Typography
A Manual of Design
This book is the legacy of Emil Ruder, one of the originator of Swiss Style, famous throughout the world for the use of asymmetric layouts, use of a grid, sans-serif typefaces and flush left, ragged right text. His holistic approach is still recognized as fundamental for graphic designers and typographers all over the world. This volume represents a critical reflection on his teaching and practice and a life- time of accumulated knowledge.
Beyond that, it is a comprehensive masterpiece seen in its overall structure: in the themes presented, in the comparison of similarities and contrasts, in the richness of the illustrations and the harmoniously inserted types. Behind the purely pedagogic examples of exact proportions, a rich, philosophical thinking shines through. Today, more than forty years after this book was first published, it is still widely used and referenced.
_ unabbreviated edition of the 1967 original edition
_ masterpiece that is still one of the most important manuals in the field
_ capturing Ruder’s ideas, methods and approaches
_ carefully selected examples

Each of the 24 fields of the cube has a graphic element. As you rotate the cube, you compose a variety of symbols and forms. The de_sign cube can serve as a source of inspiration, playfully increase awareness of form construction and train the sensory relationship between hand and eye.
Construction, deconstruction and creativity put the user's cognitive abilities and skills into play. This creative object skillfully builds on the interaction of the most diverse design influences. The clear contours and graphic features of its typography express themselves ingeniously in the form of three basic geometric shapes: square, circle and triangle. Whichever way you look at it, the small cube creates space for great things.

The Olympic Games are a kind of design games. This summer, the #paris24 organizing committee refers to its identity directly as a "brand identity".
Find out how the visual identity of the Olympic Games has changed over the years in "Olympic Games - The Design", published in 2019 thanks to the great support of the #kickstarter community.
There is no bigger challenge for designers, because that brand identity is both a national flagship and a beacon of a truly global sports culture.
"Continuing the lineage of the 1924 Games, framed by its past yet forward facing and innovative, Paris 2024 has built a brand that is as generous as it is daring, worthy of the greatest sporting event on the planet. The Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games both share the same emblem, reflecting our ambition to revolutionise the Games...There are many ways to describe Paris 2024 – people-focused, disruptive, elegant, enthusiastic, impassioned, idealistic, audacious, rational – but really, the brand is just quintessentially French. It combines images with playful audacity. It juxtaposes modernity with timeless heritage. It draws on a whole spectrum of inspiration and operates where boldness meets originality. It promotes a positive, fraternal image of sport that is deeply in touch with reality."
