This year marks the 15th anniversary of the death of Russian lawyer and whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky, who died in prison in 2009 under suspicious circumstances while investigating a vast fraud case against the Russian Treasury.

Our investigation into the Magnitsky case hasn’t stopped.

Journalist Elena Servettaz examines why Swiss prosecutors did not investigate millions in allegedly illicit money related to the Magnitsky case in the accounts of Russian citizens in Switzerland.

In the past four months, we've spoken to banks, Swiss politicians, NGOs, and sifted through hundreds of pages of financial and legal documents, and here is the final result.

“Working on the issue of torture – or on any issue in Israel that affects human rights in terms of security – has never been easy,” says Tal Steiner from the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI). The war in Gaza has made this task even more complicated.

Warring parties do everything possible to avoid reports of rights violations becoming public. Activists from Ukraine and Israel talk about how they operate in tough contexts.

Switzerland saw a surge in immigration from Europe in 2023, with 68,000 people moving for job opportunities.

This is the second highest figure since the EU-Swiss free movement agreement was signed over 20 years ago. Germans made up the largest group of immigrants last year (21% of the total), followed by people from France (16%) and Italy (15%).

Experts cite low unemployment and employment growth as the main reasons for this development. They also said that the free movement of persons serves to meet the demand for labour in Switzerland. This applies to highly skilled labour, as well as to the hospitality, construction and industrial sectors.

A similar correlation between immigration and employment growth can also be seen in Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Norway.

Elderly women and heatwaves were at the centre of the landmark European Court of Human Rights climate verdict against Switzerland in April.

The Strasbourg judges ruled that Bern had violated the human rights of a group of older Swiss women, the KlimaSeniorinnen, by failing to tackle climate change. In documents submitted to the court, elderly female plaintiffs complained of health problems that are exacerbated during heatwaves and the impact on their lives.

Brutal heatwaves have been gripping the United States, India and other parts of the world, and older people – especially women – are most vulnerable to their effects.

Until recently, jails in Zurich were criticised by human rights organisations with detainees locked up for 23 hours a day and only allowed to shower once a week. A pilot programme in Bern and Zurich aims to change that.

The cantons of Zurich and Bern are testing better conditions for prisoners. The project costs CHF12.8 million ($14.26 million).

This week on our Inside Geneva podcast, host Imogen Foulkes is kicking off a summer series of profiles: in-depth, one-on-one interviews with people who live and work in Geneva, but whose influence stretches right round the world.

We’ll be talking to doctors who work in war zones, to medical researchers looking for treatments and cures for the illnesses which affect the world’s poorest, to people extending a welcoming hand to refugees in Geneva, and many more.

We start with a woman who helps other women, worldwide, to defend themselves from exploitation and violence. Antonia Mulvey, an international human rights lawyer, runs Legal Action Worldwide (LAW), a Geneva based not-for-profit organisation that provides legal assistance, very often in conflict zones, to women.
