Norient

Norient Norient is a platform for the sound of the world: For contemporary music, quality journalism, cutting-edge research, and events such as the Norient Festival.

https://norient.com Norient is an audio-visual gallery and a community (of practice) for the sound of the world: For contemporary music, quality journalism, cutting-edge research, projects and events like the Norient Film Festival (NFF). Norient conceives music, sound, and noise as seismographs of our time, facilitates space and place for thinkers and artists from currently fifty countries to tell

new and different stories of the now and tomorrow. The goal is to support (sub)cultural diversity, broaden horizons, and open up dialogue across people, continents, and disciplines. The Norient Space «The Now in Sound» tells new stories about the world through audio-visual exhibitions, academic and journalistic articles, podcasts, photography, video, film, experimental formats, curated collections, specials and the Norient Sound Series. It is an online magazine for the future, a meta platform to support other thinkers, artists, journals, and media, and a researcher’s space for ethnographic data and bachelor, master’s and PhD theses. Topics range from electronic music in South Africa, rap in Pakistan, punk in Bolivia, free improvisation in Lebanon, Neue Musik to field recordings from landscapes, villages and cities, to reflections of diverse topics like the universality of music, noise-cancelling headphones, exoticism, or post-colonialism. Norient Place includes the biannual Norient Film Festival NFF and its satellites, lectures, performances, or concerts, curated and co-curated with the community of practice. Norient worked with: e.g. ZKM Karlsruhe, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, CTM Festival Berlin, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Keleketla! Library Johannesburg, 100Copies Music Space Cairo, Rough Trade East London, Rewire Festival The Hague, Base Milano, H3K Basel, Wiener Festwochen, Zentrum Paul Klee Bern, Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin, Frankfurter Buchmesse, Theaterspektakel Zürich, EPFL Lausanne, Bad Bonn Kilbi Düdingen, Castelgrande Bellinzona, Klang – Moor – Schopfe Gais. The Norient Shop offers publications and releases. And the planned Norient Lab experiments with new formats and practices on how to perform music and sound research in the future.

«In 2002, Norient was an attack on Orientalism and Exoticism. It was about opening up to contemporary music and expressions from the non-Western world. Now it is about creating a true community of thinkers and artists.»

«BOGOTA IS CALLED THE FRIDGE, BUT IT’S HOT. HERE, CANNIBALS EAT EACH OTHER AND EVERYTHING ELSE THAT INHABITS THE CITY, EVEN IF SOME DON’T WANT TO OR ARE AFRAID TO»

«Bogotá, known as "the refrigerator," has gestated a significant part of Colombia's music and culture. Electronic music in Colombia traces back to hip-hop and other popular genres using synthesizers, drum machines, and computers. DJs and producers imported technology in the 90s and 2000s, shaping the local sound. However, biases in a classist and racist society affected the acceptance of genres like guaracha and reggaeton.»

Today, the electronic music scene thrives in marginal, self-managed spaces like Bogotrax and Putivuelta, promoting diversity and inclusivity. Discover the history and Bogotá's evolving sound through a mind-blowing mixtape by Mariposa!

WE BUILT A NARRATIVE STRUCTURE WITH VALUABLE INPUTS HIGHLIGHTING SOME OF BOGOTA BALLROOM’S POTENTIALITIES, CONTRADICTIONS, AND OPPORTUNITIES 🇨🇴💃🏽

«The Ballroom was something we felt fit perfectly into the q***r and alternative scene of Bogotá, a chaotic city surrounded by mountains, overwhelming, contradictory, unequal, but resilient, countercultural, and a meeting point for a thousand and one ways of existing. We built a narrative structure with valuable inputs highlighting some of the Bogotá ballroom's potentialities, contradictions, and opportunities.»

WHAT DOES THE VOICE OF THE QAWWAL EVOKE?

The performance of Qawwali in South Asia is marked by its reference to the lineage of Delhi and the Sufi singer, poet, and scholar Amir Khusrau through songs that bear the trace of a lost time. Our author observes how in memorializing the past, Delhi emerges in Qawwali not as a location, an identity, or a descriptive category, but always as a space of desire.

RIP Jorge Verdin. We worked with you on our Norient book Seismographic Sounds and on one poster of the Norient Festival. It was great to have met you. That is very sad news ❤️❤️❤️

Jorge Verdín RIP
1965-2024

✨ WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LISTEN TO THE CITY IN DIFFERENT WAYS?

How does one listen when the sounds of resistance are silenced? What is the soundtrack of time spent in a prison? Can birds still be heard in the midst of noise pollution? What does the break of dawn sound like? When does the sound of celebration become violent? What is it in all these soundscapes that recalls the past and that proposes alternate futures?

REST IN PEACE DAMO SUZUKI

«I never liked to live like somebody else. For that, life is too short.» Damo Suzuki (1950–2024)

We sadly acknowledge that Damo Suzuki passed away last Friday, February 9th.

Just a month ago, he impressed the audience of the Norient Festival in Michelle Heighway's documentary «Energy: A Documentary About Damo Suzuki». For the film, the director accompanied Damo for five years after his cancer diagnosis, portraying his remarkable approach to his disease: Making music was and remained his vocation and source of strength in all his lifetime.

After leaving the Krautrock band Can in 1973, he spent 50 years traveling the world with his group, Damo Suzuki Network. He understood the magic of live music. He performed completely improvised live shows and cared little for recordings or streaming services. What seemed to matter to him more than anything was the interaction with new musicians and listeners, creating moments of connection and shared humanness. His performances evolving in the moment, his presence, wisdom, and music  will continue to inspire us!

We wish his life partner Elke Morsbach and director Michelle Heighway, who had been joining Norient Festival 2024 for an Online Q&A after the screening, his family, friends, and companions strength during these difficult days.
