Norient is a platform for the sound of the world: For contemporary music, quality journalism, cutting-edge research, and events such as the Norient Festival.

Norient conceives music, sound, and noise as seismographs of our time, facilitates space and place for thinkers and artists from currently fifty countries to tell

new and different stories of the now and tomorrow. The goal is to support (sub)cultural diversity, broaden horizons, and open up dialogue across people, continents, and disciplines. The Norient Space «The Now in Sound» tells new stories about the world through audio-visual exhibitions, academic and journalistic articles, podcasts, photography, video, film, experimental formats, curated collections, specials and the Norient Sound Series. It is an online magazine for the future, a meta platform to support other thinkers, artists, journals, and media, and a researcher’s space for ethnographic data and bachelor, master’s and PhD theses. Topics range from electronic music in South Africa, rap in Pakistan, punk in Bolivia, free improvisation in Lebanon, Neue Musik to field recordings from landscapes, villages and cities, to reflections of diverse topics like the universality of music, noise-cancelling headphones, exoticism, or post-colonialism. Norient Place includes the biannual Norient Film Festival NFF and its satellites, lectures, performances, or concerts, curated and co-curated with the community of practice. Zurich-based collective BLKSHFT and Nairobi’s boundary-questioning DJ Coco Em lead us through sounds and genres like Chicago House or Detroit Techno that are deeply rooted in Black musical traditions and histories. 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐳 is a sonic imagineer chasing frequencies that twist reality. Okret (meaning «Turn») delivers an album that doesn’t give a damn about expectations. What started as an exploration of the rhythms and melodic twists of the Balkans turned into a personal and artistic rollercoaster.

𝐑𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐐𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐫 ist ein Künstler aus Leh, Ladakh. Mit seinen künstlerischen Aktivitäten erforscht er Erinnerungen, Mythos und Poesie durch Sound Art, Kompositionen und zu gefundenen Objekten. Seit 2015 beschäftigt er sich mit genreübergreifenden Projekten. Sein Konzeptalbum «Fatima» (2023) – vom Musikmagazin als „aufrüttelnd“ beschrieben – erschien beim Schweizer Label Danse Noire und enthält Beiträge von Dis Fig und Elvin Brandhi sowie einen 48-seitigen Fotoband.

🎻 Norient at Dachstock:: Dance - A cooperation between dancers Angela Demattè, Romane Ruggiero and Melodies In My Head.

Melodies In My Head arbeitete mit der Tänzerin Romane Ruggiero an ihren neuesten Singles «If You Down» und «When Mountains Break Free» (feat. Sophie Adam). Im neuen Set im Dachstock (Weltpremiere!) steht die Tänzerin Angela Demattè im Zentrum (Co-Choreographie Romane Ruggiero).

Angela Demattè (Italien) schloss ihr Studium an der ArtEZ Dansacademie (Niederlande) ab und zog dann nach Bern, um sich Bühnen Bern anzuschliessen, wo sie bis 2019 Mitglied des Ballett Ensembles war. Seitdem ist Angela als freischaffende Tänzerin, Choreografin, Dramaturgin, Mentorin, Tanz- und Pilateslehrerin tätig. Sie arbeitet mit verschiedenen Tanzkompanien: Kor’sia, Jo Strømgren Kompani, Joshua Monten Dance Company, greywaxdancecompany, etc.

Romane Ruggiero, in Nizza geboren, war mehrere Jahre Teil des Tanz-Ensembles von Bühnen Bern und ist heute als freischaffende Künstlerin tätig. Sie studierte an der Codarts University for the Arts (Rotterdam, NL).

Melodies In My Head besteht aus dem Anthropologen und audiovisuellen Performer Thomas Burkhalter (Gründer von Norient) und dem Musiker/Produzenten Daniel Jakob (Dubokaj, Dejot, Filewile). Das Duo arbeitete neben Ruggiero und Demattè mit den TänzerInnen Ana Van Tendeloo und Ivan Larson.

Musik ist hier keine Bühne, kein Scheinwerferlicht; sie ist ein Rhythmus, der in Familien weitergegeben und im Alltag lebendig gehalten wird.

𝐒𝐎𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐘𝐀𝐍 (Aussprache S-uu-ri-en, «Sonne» auf Tamil) ist ein südasiatisches Künstler*innenkollektiv, die sich in verschiedenen Subkulturen der Schweiz bewegen. Am Norient Festival 2026 präsentiert das Kollektiv Lord Soft und KUMARI, die an den Decks mit zarten Klangtexturen beginnen, aus denen sich allmählich karnatische Musik (eine südindische Musiktradition) entfaltet. Der Auftritt eröffnet eine Interaktion zwischen den DJs und der eindrucksvollen Bharatanatyam-Tänzerin Navina Muthuthamby.

𝐒𝐎𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐘𝐀𝐍 (S-uu-ri-en, «Sun» in Tamil) is a collective formed by South Asian artists navigating subcultures in Switzerland. At Norient Festival, the collective presents Lord Soft and KUMARI, joining the decks with tender tunes that evolve into Carnatic music. The performance culminates in a unique interaction between the DJs and the captivating Bharatanatyam dancer Navina Muthuthamby.
