🎹 HYPERPLEXIA-BLACK MIDI: EVOLVING AND REMAPPING PIANO DESIGN 🇯🇵
💫 How has the piano’s design evolved and what are the possibilities for remapping it? Composer and pianist @stefanschultzemusic pursues since 2023 the exploratory and collaborative performance project HYPERPLEXIA.
It involves various musical and technological elements, including two grand pianos, one with a self-playing mechanism, virtual pianos, sample libraries, AI agents, controllers, and visuals, all interconnected via MIDI.
🌐A digital extension of performance project on norient.com, featuring contributions by Stefan Schultze and Raffael Dörig, documents and reflects the Japanese subgenre Black MIDI which has been a major influence on the project from the beginning: 🔗norient.com/hyperplexiat
ℹ️ Stefan Schultze is a composer and pianist that occupies the interface between new music, improvisation, and jazz. His compositions explore and translate music from a myriad of contexts, opening new sonic territories and transcending genres. He is a professor and heads the Master’s program for music composition in contemporary jazz at Bern Academy of the Arts HKB, Switzerland.

✨ NORIENT PLAYLIST JUNE 2024: RASHT 🇮🇷
Bordering Azerbaijan to the north and a long stretch of the Caspian Sea to the East, Gilan is a seafaring, green Iranian province brimming with life with Rasht as its capital. The folk music has distinctive sounds and rhythms that are hard to resist! Gilaki language shares much with neighboring Caucasian languages, as does the ethnic identity and culture.
Our curator @faribrad sought out music that spoke to her about contemporary creativity yet retained something recognizable, for a people who for many decades successive Iranian regimes have perpetrated human rights injustices against, mainly for being «non-Persian» and resisting an imposed homogeneity.

«ONE CANNOT EVEN CHEW PAAN IN PEACE. ONE RASCAL COUGHS, ANOTHER MAKES SOME COMMENT AND HERE I’M OUT OF BREATH FOR FEAR…»
A story-telling session that renders Rashid Jahan’s 1932 feminist short story «Dilli Ki Sair» (A journey through Delhi), into a sound work.
The Norient featured sound work relocates the original text to a contemporary context where the times have changed, yet also not. The concerns of Rashid Jahan about what it means to be a woman in a public place in Delhi in the 1930s resonates with the participants of the session as they come together to record a performative reading of the story in their voices that are situated in a different era, yet bound together by a common shared experience.
