In her concept album Maarja: The Battle of Hotels, released via @rupturedthelabel and selected one of the best albums by @thewiremagazine in 2023, @mayssajallad tells stories of urban battles during the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1976) through an architectural lens.
🔊The Beirut-based singer-songwriter, architectural researcher and activist has been invited to discuss her debut album, as well as the challenges of creating music amid Lebanon's ongoing political and social unrest alongside with the founder of the platform Beirut and Beyond @bbimf @amanisemaan at @transmusicales , today at @leschampslibres. She will be performing at the festival tomorrow at @uburennes.
ℹ️ In 2022, Mayssa Jallad contributed to the Norient multimedia publication "Beirut Adrift" which explores how artists and musicians have resisted in various ways the darkness and traumatic events that Lebanon has faced and continues to witness. In her short essay she reflects on the role of songwriting and singing as tools for resistance and derision during the uprising of October 17, 2019 in Lebanon.

ℹ️ Music, writing, and drawing served as lifelines for @aia_lemonsky during his time of imprisonment in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Reflecting on that period, he recalls how music gave him the strength to face each day, writing helped him organize his thoughts, and drawing became a form of meditation. Since his release, Aia Lemonsky has resumed creating music with his band, @kaaktaal (which translates to “The Serendipity of Life”). In addition, he is building a career as an architect alongside being a professional graphic designer and video editor.

ℹ️ Mohamed Rai started drumming when he was three years old, encouraged by the musicians in his family: his grandfather Ibrahim Ahmed (Molhudhoo Thuthu), and his uncle Nashid, front man of the well-known band «Zero Degree Atoll», who passed away in 2016. Mohamed studied graphic design in Sri Lanka. He left the dense capital Malé and today lives on Thulusdhoo island, where he runs an Airbnb (@starlitthulusdhoomaldives), and recently opened the music venue/ Restaurant «The Shore Shack» (@theshoreshacksessions).
