Parts of the Respiratory System🫁

Main function: Facilitates gas exchange

🫁Upper Respiratory Tract
Nose & nasal cavity: filters & humidifies air
Pharynx: helps with swallowing & serves as a passage for air to the larynx
Larynx: protects from aspiration & controls the flow of air

🫁Lower Respiratory Tract
Trachea: airway that directs air to the lungs
Bronchi & bronchioles: bronchi split into smaller bronchioles, help regulate airflow
Alveoli: tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs; O2 enters the blood, & CO2 is removed

🫁Accessory Structures
Diaphragm: contracts to draw air into the lungs and relaxes to expel air.
Pleura: membranes surrounding the lungs; reduce friction during breathing & help with lung expansion
