At 28, Keith Hodder had never had a sip of alcohol, drag of a cigarette, or even a cup of coffee. And it wasn't for religious reasons.

On the "Breaking Free" episode of Now or Never, Keith shared how as a young, closeted, gay man he felt a need to follow a set of rules to maintain control and avoid judgement. But that is only part of the story.

Keith touches on his family's history with alcoholism, the difficult relationship with his step-father, and more, in his powerful personal essay about embracing the vices he used to avoid. Find it on the CBC Now or Never website

Donna Kane sleeps outside under the stars every night, in an old cast iron bed – with a bullet hole in the headboard!- on her farm in northeastern B.C.

And she’s not afraid of bears.

She falls asleep in ‘the company of stars,” hearing coyotes and foxes and “sparrows rustling in the lilac bush finding their little space for the night.”

For more than 100 nights this year, Donna has slept outside [sometimes in long johns], even as temperatures dip down to freezing and she hears the geese flying south and there’s a skiff of frost on her duvet.

Sometimes, Donna watches meteors streak through the sky, or the aurora borealis light up the night.

“You’re lying there and you let the outside world absorb you.”

You can listen to more of Donna Kane’s dreamy story on the "Breaking free" episode of the Now or Never podcast, https://link.chtbl.com/hmyZFpqw

"It feels like somethings been ripped from you"

When Nicole Drakes shared her dream of opening a bakery, she was warned it would be a path to bankruptcy. Convinced that she could beat the odds, Nicole poured her heart and all her savings into opening Sweet Delights Bakery and Deli in Morell, PEI.

Just three months after welcoming customers, the dream was over. Nicole's bakery became another one of the 1 in 5 small businesses across the country that don't make it to their first year.

Less than a year after closing her business, Nicole shares her lessons learned in hitting rock bottom, and what she's dreaming of today. Hear it all this week on the 'Getting Ready For The Worst. Just In Case" episode of the Now or Never podcast: https://link.chtbl.com/-QxsKS77

David Arama is ready for the worst — like nuclear, worst. As a prepper and survivalist, has a nuclear bomb shelter at one of his residences (just in case), and a 300-plus acres property that’s completely off grid. But he’s a lot more chill than you might think. Hear his story on the link below.

What's on the other side of being a high achiever? For Eman Idil Bare, it's burnout.

Eman had graduated from journalism school, worked as an investigative reporter, completed a fashion design diploma, shown at New York Fashion Week, was a trained yoga instructor, graduated law school with honours, and ghostwritten 11 books, all before she turned 30.

Today, Eman calls herself a "heavily degreed, recovering people pleaser" who prioritizes rest, travel, and refuses to tell her parents exactly what she does for work.

Hear the family and societal expectations that pushed Eman to go so hard, and the terrifying moments that made her realise she had to change her life, on this week's episode of Now or Never - Mission Accomplished. Now What?: https://link.chtbl.com/-QxsKS77

What's it like to get a "real job" at 35, after a career as a professional hockey player?

When Ben Scrivens retired from the NHL, he earned a Masters degree in Social Work and then started helping other retired players figuring out what to do next, through his work at the alumni association.

He found that many former players struggled with the same things he did without the structure and goals of a life in hockey. Ben says for years he couldn't even watch the game because of the resentment he had built up. After some skiing and a trip to Burning Man, Ben went on to look for what brings purpose to his life now.

Kyanna Giles knows how to make the most of a second chance.

The 26 year old has been playing basketball since she was just nine. Kyanna and her twin Kyia are so good at the game, they became known as the 'Basketball Twins' in their hometown of Winnipeg.

University scouts from across the country and the US lined up to recruit the 'Basketball Twins,' who chose the University of Regina and joined the Cougars.

Kyanna won rookie of the year in her first year, and led the team to a championship in her second year. Her goal of going pro after school looked likely.

But then, in a championship game in 2019 she went in for a layup and tore her ACL. She lay screaming on the floor wondering if she would ever play again.

"Basketball is all I know. If I'm not playing basketball again, what am I going to do?" said Kyanna. "I'm not ready to hang up my shoes."

After two and a half years of hard work and rehab, Kyanna is in the middle of an undefeated season with her new team, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.

Listen to Kyanna's comeback story on this week's episode of Now or Never, where we're joining people in the middle of a second chance and taking another shot at their dreams.

One of these men is a newly licensed lawyer in Canada, and the other is his son.

At 80 years old Mohsin Rashdi has finally realised his goal of being an accredited lawyer in Canada, more than 30 years after leaving his law practice in Pakistan.

When Mohsin first came to Canada he assumed he'd be able to work as a lawyer but quickly found out his path to accreditation would require several costly courses and years of work. With the immediate need to support his family, Mohsin shelved his law ambitions to work entry level office jobs during the day and manage a convenience store with his wife in the evenings.

Decades later, and with the encouragement of his son Baqa, Mohsin decided to focus back on his goal.

"My son has been a source of my inspiration because he has always been pushing me to do it. He has never let me forget. He wanted me to be like father like son."
Mohsin was called to the Ontario bar in August and now works as a junior lawyer under his son Baqa.

"Technically I'm his boss but at the end of the day he's the head of the household for me."

This week on Now or Never we are meeting people taking a second chance at big dreams. Listen on CBC Radio One Thursdays at 2pm (2:30pm NT), Sunday at 3pm (3:30pm NT) or on the CBC Now or Never podcast

The only thing more amazing than the delicious treats at this brand new Mexican bakery is the amount of love and support this family has for one another.

Brenda Hernandez-Acosta moved her family from Mexico to Winnipeg ten years ago and the idea of opening her own bakery was so beyond what she thought was possible that she never really allowed herself to dream of it.

That is, until her family decide to give her the motivation and support to try and make her dream come true. Now, the bustling bakery is a full on family affair, with everyone chipping in to help mom live out her dream.

And my favourite part is....all the murals and artwork in the place were done by Brenda herself, who had never picked up a paintbrush ever before. But when the stress and worry got too much for her leading up to the grand opening, she needed to do something to occupy her mind, so she spent hours decorating the shop to make it feel like home.

Give them a shout out in the comments and let me know what is your favourite bakery item to dive into!
