Today’s show is a true blue ‘hump day special’!

I will be revisiting some of my Valentine classic favorites, like Harry P***y and Art Phag among others for all the star-crossed lovers out the. But the show will not be ‘blue’ in the ‘blue’ or ‘hump’ sense, it might be a bit more ‘blue’ in the bittersweet sense because this is going to be my last show for a while folks.

The Fiji Mermaid is going on hiatus for about nine months while I work on my MA and re-find the music that I love.

This is a big deal, because I have been hosting the show since 2011! I have sincerely enjoyed meeting so many of you, chatting with such talented individuals and being part of so many people’s drives home each week.

Part of me is going to miss making and sharing all the dirty jokes on air, but part of me knows I will just have more to share when I come back :)

You might be able to guess what the secret word is today, but to be sure you will have to tune in to find out!

These two spectacular human beings have braved the ARCTIC FLOW of Vancouver Island and made the epic trek from Nanaimo to Victoria for the show to kick all shows in the ass!
Get down to the Phoenix tonight and catch their set!!

Yowza it’s cold outside but it’s nice and warm for tonite’s show with and Pepul Etrz, doors at 730pm bands start at 8pm, we’re on at 10, let’s melt down Victoria together 🔥🔥🔥

Hi all this is an uber early post!
I am just super happy about what I have planned for tomorrow's show!

Todays show is one that I debated a great deal about how and if I would do it. In the end I don’t think I will ever feel completely comfortable with the subject matter or know the best way to express myself. But nonetheless I have made my best effort at this time to recognise it.

This has been a very traumatizing time for Jews and Palestinians both in the home country and around the world. The conversations that arise out of any of the many conflicts between Israel and Palestine, Jews and Palestinians are naturally volatile on both sides. And so they should be, often there are many lives lost at the center of it all. The events that began on Saturday morning are this but on a level that is very different from past conflicts. That is why so many Jews have become more vocal than normal.

I am another one of these Jews. I always have been one, but I have avoided being open about my feelings and experience because it never goes over well. But this weekend was the zenith, and has left me no choice but to speak.
This weekend is what true terrorism looks like.

This weekend made a horrible untrue name for Palestinians. This weekend made a horrible untrue name for Muslims. This weekend divided people further than they have ever been divided. This weekend killed innocent civilian Israelis and Palestinians.

Today I play two albums that I believe can translate symbolically feelings shared by everyone involved and impacted by the continued brutality of this weekend with the hope of one day there being….peace.

For a reflective journal activity, I can only suggest you write about the people you are grateful for in your life, dead or alive. Light a candle and contact your family and friends. Tell them you love them.

Plus there is the Songhees Nation South Island Pow Wow happening this Saturday at the Royal Athletic Park!

Tune in to The Fiji Mermaid on CFUV 101.9 FM today for a very special Company of Ideas Forum show!

I have been anticipating putting this particular show together since May this year but was waiting on the audio from all the presentations!

Back in May I had the privilege of attending, presenting, and meeting some of the most delightful people! The conversations that were had both formally and professionally were inspiring and todays show is a very small taste for those action packed three days.

Each year since 2008 the Company Ideas Forum meets on Hornby Island at the Jeffery Rubinoff Sculpture Park with the sole purpose to debate and tease out answers to a thematic philosophical question related to visual art. The presenters are a wonderful blend of Artists, Musicians, Philosophers, and Art Historians creating a perfectly interdisciplinary environment for ideas! The topic for this year’s forum was how music and visual art are connected, related, inspired or influence by one another. And what a perfect subject to bring to radio!

Now there was no possible way to included every single presentation unfortunately in today’s show. So I decided to focus on the music that was created and presented for the forum by attending three artists and musicians. But I did include four presentations that had musical samples or strong references.
Part of my goal for sharing this sample sized experience of the forum is to inspire you to check out more of the presentations on the Jeffery Rubinoff Sculpture Park Youtube channel!

Also I have tagged everyone in todays show that is on social media, and encourage you to follow them because they are all fountains of creativity and sharp wit! :)

Tune in today for a special recap of my Portland auditory adventure!

Last week I was in Portland Oregon for a visit to the OJMCHE to examine the largest Mezuzot collection in America and Canada for my MA research. But I was also lucky enough to attend a truly wonderful event on Wednesday night, and see my dear friend Joel Nelson play in a new project called Broken Crow. But the kismet did not end there, the touring and talented Zack Rowden also played that night at Mother Foucault Bookstore, and then played on Saturday in Victoria at a new and beautiful venue space in Victoria called Tonight at The Orange Light.
This was by no means a perfect trip, but it was a true gift. Anne and Alisha of the OJMCHE it was a pleasure to meet you both and the Mezuzot, thank you for welcoming me so warmly! Thank you Joel, Sam, Caspar Arielle and Candy for you kindness, I feel blessed meeting you all! And Zack it was great to make your acquaintance!
Trav & Shane you both have restored my faith in humanity and I actually believe that it can exist Victoria. Tonight At The Orange Light will be having another exceptional event this Saturday, I suggest you attend.
When you tune into the show today I want to encourage you to look outside of yourself and to the people around you that feel like home. Cherish those people and try to be like them. Victoria is a beautiful city and we could all be a more kind to each other.

Hey Hey!

Today I have a serendipitously special show today! Tune in to 101.9FM to hear it all!

Approximately a year and five months ago I interviewed the talented and authentic Harman Burns (aka Plasticine Cowboy) about her release of the album Yellow Barks Spider. In that interview I learned that her album was actually the soundtrack for the book of the same name she was working on! That book was just officially finished by Harman last week on the 15th of August!

So today’s Fiji Mermaid is a showcase of Harman’s work over the last year, and holy crow it is prolific!

She has released more albums as Plasticine Cowboy, but she has introduced two new projects, Horse Daughter and Wands of The Minor Arcana! Tune it to hear it also, plus my interview with her in March 2022!
