Join us next Tuesday, November 19th for a special event with Vancouver Writers Fest! 🎶

Neuroscientist, musician, and bestselling author Daniel J. Levitin reveals how the deep connections between music and the human brain can be harnessed for healing in his extraordinary follow-up to This Is Your Brain on Music—which revolutionized our understanding of the neuroscience of song. Discover how music can create profound benefits for those both young and old, as Levitin sits down with André Picard on November 19th.

The conversation will be followed up by a performance by yours truly, Chor Leoni!

As our singers gather together today for our annual start of season retreat, we want to reintroduce ourselves to you, our treasured community of friends, colleagues and supporters, as simply, Elektra. Our choir welcomes adult singers of all gender identities who sing in the treble range.

We invite you to check out our beautifully designed NEW WEBSITE (!), which reflects this change. We are so looking forward to singing for you later this fall!

The opera community is mourning the loss of Rose-Ellen Nichols, who died on Jan. 30 at the age of 41.

Nichols was a Coast Salish mezzo-soprano known for her roles in productions of Marie Clements and Brian Current’s Missing and Margaret Atwood’s Pauline. To CBC Music's Marion Newman, she was also a dear friend:

"Rose-Ellen was a successful Indigenous woman in the arts. She was openly proud of all of who she was and had a deep love and respect for her family. She sang with a gorgeous, deep voice, sometimes heart-wrenching and other times overflowing with joy — a voice that revealed her entire very real and down-to-earth personality. She was also one of the best humans I've had the honor to call a friend."

Hear Marion Newman's full tribute, including a performance from Nichols of "Mother's Aria" from Missing, on the next episode of Saturday Afternoon at the Opera — tune in tomorrow at 4:50 p.m. (5:20NT) at cbcmusic.ca/saato.
