We were thrilled to learn that 𝘔𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘪: 𝘈 𝘚𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘒𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯, by Joe Thottungal () with Anne DesBrisay, was named Best of the Best – Indian Food Culture during the held in Riyadh recently.

The announcement was made at the Saudi Feast Food Festival, Edouard Cointreau of the Gourmand Awards, who praised the work for its depth and cultural significance.

The Joy Bus Diner is a 100% nonprofit restaurant whose mission is to bring hearty, chef-inspired meals and uplifting encouragement to persons with cancer in and around the Phoenix Valley. Founded in 2011 by award-winning chef and Food Network 𝘊𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 champion Jennifer Caraway, The Joy Bus was named in honor of her dear friend Joy whom she lost to ovarian cancer. It embodies the idea that when people come together to support one another, they can build something remarkable—whether it’s a hearty meal, a warm moment of connection, or a brighter world.

Ask 7IDANsuu James Hart how long it took him to master the art of carving, and he’ll tell you: “Around ten thousand years.”

The Haida artist and Hereditary Chief has earned national prominence and international acclaim for his towering poles, stately cedar sculptures, and massive bronzes—monumental works that extend the long continuum of Haida visual traditions into powerful new forms. His most celebrated works include the 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘦 at UBC; the 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘦𝘯 bronzes, which overlook the in Whistler, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Plains of Abraham; and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘛𝘰𝘰) at the Audain, a sculptural masterpiece that inspired this publication, the first devoted to Hart’s work.

Alongside hundreds of new and archival photos of nineteen monumental works located across Canada and beyond, 7𝘐𝘋𝘈𝘕𝘴𝘶𝘶 𝘑𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘵 effectively assembles what would be an impossible exhibition, and draws on extensive interviews with the artist to sketch the evolution of his five-decade practice and illuminate the interconnections among his own works and historical Haida artworks. In their new book The Ontario Cottage: Perfect of Its Kind, authors Lynne DiStefano and Dan Schneider share their fascination with the Ontario Cottage, one of the most recognizable historic houseforms in the province. The book, which includes 75 full-page photographs and many other illustrations, examines the design lineage of the cottage, its proportions and distinctive parts, and the reasons for its enduring appeal. Several examples of Ontario Cottages from Prince Edward County are profiled.

About the Authors

Lynne DiStefano, PhD (UPenn) is a specialist in cultural heritage and architectural conservation. Co-founder and past Director of the University of Hong Kong’s Architectural Conservation Programmes, she is a Faculty Associate at the Willowbank School of Restoration Arts. Previously, Lynne was a Chief Curator at Museum London. She is the Co-author (with Nancy Z. Tausky) of Victorian Architecture in London and Southwestern Ontario: Symbols of Aspiration.

Dan Schneider is a heritage enthusiast, policy wonk, writer and professional heritage consultant. Currently president of the Stratford-Perth County branch of Architectural Conservancy Ontario, Dan was custodian for many decades of a c. 1856 limestone Ontario Cottage near St. Marys. His award-winning and widely consulted heritage policy blog OHA+M is housed on the website of the Heritage Resources Centre of the University of Waterloo.''

In 1992 Canadian documentary filmmaker and photographer David Kaufman () travelled to Poland to produce a television program about hidden child survivors of the Holocaust. A decade later, he returned to make films about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Łódź Ghetto. Kaufman was deeply moved by the quality of Jewish material culture—the physical remnants of Jewish life—that he saw on these early visits. In 2007 he set out on the first of many trips over two decades to record images of tenements, factories, synagogues, and cemeteries that were part of everyday Jewish life in pre-Holocaust eastern Europe. He also made photos of some of the places of despair and death where Jews were killed during the war.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦 is more than an act of preserving memory. Kaufman brings his decades of documentary storytelling experience to bear, illuminating these places left behind. His photographs and accompanying texts describe a historic community that played a major role in the development of eastern European society and which left behind grand industrial complexes, urban neighbourhoods, architectural landmarks, beautiful synagogues, as well as vast cemeteries, and haunting memorials. The photographs also tell the stories of the afterlives of those places, many repurposed, some lovingly cared for by non-Jews who remember, and others slowly returning to the earth, but which are preserved in this book’s pages.

With introductory essays by political commentator Bernard Avishai and Polish journalist and heritage activist Joanna Podolska, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦: 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘑𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦 is a tribute to a community that met a tragic end and a testament to how our internal landscapes are inextricably bound to the places of our past.
