Hello relatives,

There won’t be an episode our Our Storytellers this week! We’re taking a week off to align our marketing and posting schedules. (And taking some rest time)

We’ll be back to posting a familiar face next Sunday.

All the best,
Riel and Jim

Attention fluent Cree speakers in the lower mainland of BC. Our Storytellers may have a paid position opening up for you.

A lot of great work has been done in language preservation. However, Our Storytellers is looking to bring access to Nehiyawewin in a conversational format to any who are seeking to learn it.

The contract would entail once a week lessons, in which I come to you in person with our filming team. We would cover vocabulary and practice conversations. Week after week.

Please let me know if you or someone you know would be interested in teaching. I recognize I live in an area with different languages, however Nehiyawewin is what my ancestors spoke, so I'll learn that first.

Any leads help!

On this weekend's episode, we're joined by Mohawk Artist and Filmmaker, Shelley Niro.

Shelley recently released a new movie called Café Daughter, about a young Chinese-Cree named Yvette Wong as she embraces her heritage and builds towards her dream of becoming a doctor in 1960s Saskatchewan. The film is based the true story of Dr. Lillian Eva Quan Dyck.

Shelley also has an international art retrospective exhibition that's touring art galleries.

We discuss filmmaking and storytelling on this weekend's episode of Our Storytellers.

My hands go up to all the people who are teaching and learning the language currently. My hands go up to the children that are learning from their grandparents.

Does anyone know someone who has successfully learnt their language fluently, while having English or French being their first language? If so, please contact me because I think I really need to interview that person.

After 10 episodes of the podcast, I'm coming to the dire and urgent epiphany that if the language is gone, we're going to lose SO MUCH of our ways. There is so much knowledge in the languages that we can gain access to if we just learn it.

As someone who embraces technology, I think that there will be development in AI that will help "translate" our languages, but I do not foresee AI understanding our languages like the old ones do.

Please tell me because I am ignorant and have no clue. And I barely know a lick of my language. Please tell me, is our current solution enough? Do we need to find a better solution? Hiy-hiy
