I started hosting this radio show 13 years agoāfor kids, by a kid. It was messy, DIY, and delightful, and it led me to so many opportunities and a wonderful community of artists who are now my peers. As I started my career as a comedian/actor, the show shifted with me, highlighting improv comedy segments and coining the much ācoolerā term, āpodcastā.
A few years later, I returned with a show that morphed into a blend of all of my worldsāTHE GOOBER HOUR: freeform novelty weirdness, character phone calls, vinyl records, indie musicians, childrenās musicians and comedians together at last. Basically, a radio show that is confusing, wonderful, and impossible to market. Iāve received an equal amount of letters from parents and families as I have from analog aficionados. Whether you listened one time or every week, thank you, it has been a joy.
You may have noticed that for the last year or so, our station affiliates have mostly been airing rerun episodes, and our website has gone down. Let me explain.
In 2024, SiriusXMās Kids Place Live laid off two champions of my madness, Jack Forman and Kenny Curtis, therefore removing the airing my songs and comedy segments, as well as the primary source of funding. Then, our parent radio company went down, losing the producers who assisted with the show. This year, the future of public radio is not looking dandier. As a full time artist, making time for this little āradio show that couldā has become harder to justify. Which leads to my announcementā¦
ā¦that The Goober Hour isnāt going anywhere! Now more than ever, I am so grateful to host an hour that highlights artistry, creativity, and a mad amount of joy. I am returning independently, most likely through Substack, to bring you freeform radio every Saturday, which will remain free for station affiliates to play. This is possible thanks to the artistic support of my new home-base, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater here in Los Angeles, and artists like Lucky Diaz and Kymberly Stewart, who Iāve been lucky enough (pun intended) to start working/creating with this year.
Soā¦ whatās next?
Well first, the show returns. Iāve started working on a compilation album of Goober songs covered by some of the showās longest-played artists, which will come out in the next year with proceeds going to the show. There may also be a āpaid subscriberā option with some bonus goodies for those who would like to directly support the show.
Artists, Iāll continue to highlight artists new and old, in all genres, so please do send along your songs! And listeners (readers?), I canāt thank you enough for being here. No matter how noisy the world gets, let us all remember how lucky we are to sit down and appreciate a funny song or two. I sure wonāt forget.
