Beneficial Shock The Fully Illustrated Movie Magazine Beneficial Shock! Is an independently run annual film magazine unlike any other.

It takes a humorous and irreverent look at movies through the creative lens of a motley crew of talented illustrators, designers, photographers and writers. Each thematic issue looks to challenge established modes of publishing by extending the editorial experience to the screen – becoming as much a magazine to watch as to read.

🗣️ In Conversation with Issue 9 contributor Poan Pan .pan …
Taiwanese born, London-based freelance illustrator Poan Pan is known for his whimsical illustrations that incorporate a tactile graphic approach (akin to felt art) in service of mature creative thinking. Using a soft palette to create an array of structuralist compositions, his work celebrates the movement and warmth of humanity, capturing the essence of awkwardness and quirkiness in everyday life. Here Poan shares his creative process, inspiration and lays out the importance of planning in order to sustain a lasting practice.
Poan’s illustrations appear in the Fun and Games issue out in October 💥

🗣️ In Conversation: Issue 9 contributor Jon McCormack ::: New Interview on the website 👨‍💻
- - -
Dublin-born illustrator Jon McCormack’s work is full of atmosphere - and, while motionless on the page - evokes a sense of narrative that sets the imagination going. With inspiration derived from many and varied interests that include cinema, q***r culture, graphic novels, mythology and absurd humour – he has built up a solid client base that obviously appreciates his knack for bold, smart and evocative work. Here Jon discusses his creative journey, staying disciplined and keeping imposter syndrome at bay.

Catch the brilliant work of Beneficial Shock pal Adam Hogarth, whose show ‘Battle Cat’ is showing until August 4th!
-
‘Battle Cat is a new collection of drawings and prints that explore post-nuclear legacies, destructivism, folklore and storytelling by artist Adam Hogarth.’
-
“We all desire the future to turn out more happily than I have figured it. In particular we desire our present civilization to advance steadily toward some kind of Utopia. The thought that it may decay and collapse, and that all its spiritual treasure may be lost irrevocably, is repugnant to us. Yet this must be faced as at least a possibility.” Olaf Stapledon, ‘Last and First Men’.

🗣️Drawing Inspiration: Issue 9 contributor Zoé Maghamès Peters / / / ✏️
Born in the French countryside, Zoé Maghamès Peters arrived at art through an unconventional route. She holds a double degree in political science/history and a master’s in gender studies, specialising in sexual violence research - and thanks to a fascination for digging deep into subjects, her creativity ultimately found expression in illustration. With stylistic nods to the psychedelia-tinged work of Heinz Edelmann and Peter Max - Zoé’s work brings a contemporary edge to a wide variety of topics through her bold use of colour and hint of abstract intrigue.

🗣️In Conversation with Issue 9 contributor Tom Humberstone / New Interview exclusively on the Beneficial Shock Blog…
• • •
Tom’s bold and expressive mark-making invokes a highly cinematic feel through his work – unsurprising, considering his love of film. Even when re-presenting familiar moments from movies, there are suggestions of something deeper going on in his use of framing, colour and composition - making the viewer rethink the moment and its meaning.
-
He is the author of Suzanne: The Jazz Age Goddess of Tennis and his comics have appeared in the Ignatz award-winning The Nib, the New Statesman, Vox and Buzzfeed amongst others. He is also the editor and publisher of the critically acclaimed UK comics anthology Solipsistic Pop and co-editor of Over The Line: An Introduction to Poetry Comics.
-
In the interview Tom discusses his process, shares his thoughts on style and introduces into our vocabulary the word ‘aphantasia’.
-
His piece ‘Bloodsport: The Most Dangerous Game, Screen Adaptations and Cinematic Class War’ appears in the Fun and Games issue out in October.

📝 Cover Story 🎨
Our cover artist for issue 8 is the wildly talented who’s work seamlessly traverses commercial, social and authorial. Asked with freedom to create our cover with the simple brief of ‘Awe and Wonder’, Raphaelle harked back to her film-watching experience of her youth - tipping her creative hat to the strong and inspirational female characters who appeared in a range of films across a variety of genres. From fiery princesses and determined activists to comic-book vamps and kick-ass brides; these were the screen icons that helped to reframe a certain kind of female representation at the turn of the millennium.

🗣️ Introducing New Beneficial Shock! Contributor... Halil Karasu
--
With a passion for movie posters and comics, Halil's evocative style of illustration is a psychedelic melange of colourful, quirky and visceral imagery often paired with equally eccentric typography. Often celebrating the undiscovered gems of Turkish Cinema, his Illustration and graphic design work span books, album covers, theatre posters and movie merchandise. We're chuffed as nuts to have Halil contributing a piece for the new Awe & Wonder issue on one of his (and our) favorite directors, David Cronenberg.

See Halil's fantastic work alongside so many others in the new issue due out November 15th!
