Today is World Food Day - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) created World Food Day to commemorate its founding in Quebec City, October 16, 1945. The goal of the FAO is to free humanity from hunger and malnutrition, and to effectively manage the global food system. World Food Day events are organized in over 150 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and help strengthen the link between agriculture and food security.

I produced this video which premiered at a number of Belleville's United Churches this morning. It shows the stark reality of hunger in our City and the many people who are working to combat this scourge.

100 years ago today Belleville's “Log Cabin Monument" was unveiled. It is was the culmination of the celebrations held in Belleville in June, 1924 to commemorate the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists (UEL) in the Bay of Quinte area. The 5-day event was HUGE with many 1,000's in attendance – easily one of the largest events that ever took place here! The cornerstone for this monument – the first to commemorate the UEL in any Canadian City - was laid on June 17, 1924 and was unveiled on Sept 8. It was designed by Belleville Architect J. Arnold Thompson and built by former Mayor George A. Bennett. On a rainy Fall day (much like today) Colonel Harry Cockshutt Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, unveiled the monument in front of thousands of citizens and students.

By early part of this century, excitement around the Loyalists had long faded and the monument had fallen into a sad state of disrepair. There were plans to replace the deteriorating structure with another monument or plaque but the Hastings County Historical Society strongly opposed the idea. The structure was found to be repairable and with the help of the John M. Parrott Foundation, the monument was moved across the street from the original location on southwest corner of Front and Dundas to its present location on the northwest corner. It was restored and re-dedicated on Sept 10, 2005.

Sadly, the monument has been left to deteriorate again.
