Americana as a format developed in the mid 1990s as an alternative to mainstream

country music which many people felt had become too commercial and no longer represented “real” country music. Tulare Dust, a song writer's tribute to Merle Haggard was produced by Tom Russell and Dave Alvin (of the Blasters) and helped initiate the Americana Charts back in 1994. Along with Tom Russell and Dave Alvin we’ve been playing Steve Earle and Dwight Yoakam since they debuted on the music scene back in 1986. Ameripolitan arose as a genre in 2013 stressing a prominent Roots Influence including H***y Tonk, Rockabilly, Hillbilly, Western Swing and Outlaw music. Dale Watson, a strong proponent of H***y Tonk and the Bakersfield sound was the driving force behind the format which had it's first Music Awards Show in Austin in February 2014. The Bakersfield Sound developed in and around Bakersfield California and although rock and roll was also a major influence, it stayed true to it’s H***y Tonk roots and was a predecessor of both country-rock and outlaw music. Western Swing is a widely eclectic music incorporating both Jazz and Blues and came to the forefront in the 1930s during the heyday of Bob Wills (a major influence on Merle Haggard) and Milton Brown and his Brownies. Although it became less popular after World War it has seen a revival since the 70s when Merle Haggard released “A Tribute to the Best Damned fiddler in the World" and Ray Benson formed Asleep at the Wheel. Along with both kinds of music noted above (Country & Western) the show also features Cajun music (Zydeco’s country sibling) and well as traditional country. The show also plays tracks by Roots artists appearing locally and in the area (Ann Arbor to Buffalo and Toronto) It’s the place to get your fix of country music in London. In memorial RIP Todd Daniel Snider (Oct 11, 1966 – Nov 14, 2025) 59 yr old

I feel very blessed that I got the privilege to work with Todd Snider many times across my life’s journey. His first show in Nashville before he got his record deal was opening for me at the record release concert for One Foot in the H***y Tonk in 1992. He opened for Jason and The Scorchers on two tours of the Midwest and South in 1995. In the early 2000s, for some unfathomable reason, he was a neighbor of ours living in a country ranch house down the road in Fairview. I never quite got why Todd was living there. He definitely wasn’t the kind of guy wanting to have a big garden or a flock of chickens! I would often stop by and visit him. We ended up writing two songs together: “This Town Isn’t Keeping You Down” for Jason and The Scorchers, and “James Dean’s Car” for my All Over Creation album. He guested on that track. In my dealings with him at that time I began to see that Todd’s projection of the basic hippie ethic of being kind to people was not a put on. He lived it. For example, on both of those songs he gifted me the publishing rights, saying he wanted to show his appreciation for what my music meant to him. He was that kind of guy, always sharing a laugh and good vibes with those around him, both through his music and personal interactions. He lived his belief in the basic goodness of humanity.

The biggest and most wonderful gift he gave to me, and by extension my Farmer Jason audience, was the recurring role he played in the Farmer Jason world as “Famous Folk Singer Todd Snider.” We had a running schtick about Todd losing his pet moose. His deadpan monologue before “Moose on the Loose” is absolute magic. Later we did a video for it (produced by Flick Wilshire and former BR549 bass player Jay McDowell) at a music store with Todd still searching for his pet moose. Todd delivered an amazing performance, superbly funny. His line “I am disoriented Farmer Jason” became a catch phrase with many families who got Farmer Jason. Todd once told me that his recurring appearances in the Farmer Jason world brought him more kudos than any side project he ever did. I can’t tell you how much that meant to me.
I still often get asked by cute kids: “Has famous folks singer Todd Snider found his pet moose?” Yes, I will always believe that Todd found his pet moose, and is sharing it with all of us.
