Bishop's University Film Festival - BUFF BUFF is a annual film festival led by the students, for the students. February-March: Make a movie (or wrap one up)!

The Bishop’s University Film Festival (BUFF) celebrates and publicizes the creativity and skill of Bishop’s students, no matter what program they are in, through an annual competition in digital filmmaking. How it works
January: Sign up through the English Department, in order to reserve a slot at the Gala. (5 minutes or less folks)
March-April: BUFF Gala happens end of March/early April, so make

sure to hand in the USB with your film on it before then (deadline provided once you've signed up)

The GALA: red carpet, bow ties, high heels, photo ops (and of course a lovely spread) make this an evening of celebration! All films are screened, then a short intermission allows the 5 judges (including a special VIP guest judge!) to select the winners from each category. Attendees then sit back down for an awards ceremony, with winners receiving prizes and awards and much applause! Full details of the contest will soon be available.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT: DEADLINES FOR APPLICATIONS APPROACHING

1) TOMLINSON INTERN FOR ARTS AND CULTURAL EVENTS
The Department of English at Bishop’s organizes many cultural initiatives throughout the academic year, including the Morris House Reading Series (MHRS), the Bishop’s University Film Festival (BUFF), the Mitre literary journal, and the Ogden Glass Lecture, all of which require careful organization and promotion in order to be successful.

The English Department invites applications for one Tomlinson Intern, who will support the department chair in organizing and publicizing these and other events, coordinate with other department faculty and the BUFF Directors, and recruit and manage student volunteers.

2) BUFF STUDENT DIRECTORS, SENIOR AND JUNIOR
The Bishop’s University Film Festival (BUFF) invites applications for TWO BUFF Student Directors. BUFF was launched in 2015 as a one-night showcase for student filmmaking at Bishop’s. Since then, it has grown into the animating centre of filmmaking at Bishop’s, a complex ongoing festival that culminates in a red-carpet gala event near the end of the academic year. As such, it requires year-round preparation, organization, and promotion.

We're looking for the Director of the Tenth Annual Bishop's University Film Festival (BUFF).

The Bishop's University Film Festival (BUFF) was launched in 2015 as a one-night showcase for student filmmaking at Bishop's. Since then, it has grown into the animating centre of filmmaking at Bishop's, a complex production that, although still culminating in a red-carpet gala event near the end of the academic year, requires year-round preparation, organization, and promotion.

The duties of the BUFF Student Director include the following:

Working with BUFF's Faculty Director, Steven Woodward, throughout the academic year to maintain and further develop the vibrancy of the festival
Recruiting a team of student volunteers to help with graphic design (banners, posters, programs), communications, gala organization (technical, hospitality, house management), gala MCing, and multimedia production (trailers, promos, gala program, pre-recorded gala components, post-gala distribution)
Launching the festival in the Fall and maintaining a social-media presence throughout the year
Organizing any ancillary events that occur between September and April, like our annual student trip to the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal (October), the guest lectures of professional filmmakers, and filmmaking workshops for students
Designing, "writing" and producing the BUFF gala as a scripted event in itself
Liaising with other arts events, like Arts Week, the Graduate Fine Arts Show, and the Festival Cinéma du Monde de Sherbrooke
Publicizing the gala after the event via our social media channels

This is a volunteer position, without pay, but some students may be eligible to count it as experiential learning or as a credited internship, depending on their degree program.

Application Procedure and Deadline:
Please send your CV and a covering letter (as a single pdf file) to Steven Woodward, [email protected], no later than 4:30pm on Friday, 27 October 2023.

Here's a fascinating documentary film about the challenges of making a film, especially one that you never planned to make.

WINTOPIA

A box of tapes uncovered. A lifelong Utopian obsession. A daughter’s attempt to complete her father’s final film. Wintopia traces the enigmatic footsteps of renowned documentary filmmaker Peter Wintonick through the lens of his daughter, Mira, as she tries to decipher the map he has left behind. Reverberating with emotion and whimsy, the film guides us on a journey through possible worlds in pursuit of reconciliation, both between artist and family and between dreams and reality. Even for audiences unfamiliar with Peter’s work, the film is a touching
story of grief, love and hope.
