T.O.F.U. Magazine The pro-intersectional, anti-oppression vegan publication that pushes the conversation beyond your plate. T.O.F.U. has now landed in homes across the globe.
(9)

magazine began as an attempt to further local vegan literature by spreading the message that “there is an alternative.” Originally sparked by the success of a Halifax dining guide and two cookbooks, T.O.F.U. From the start, the magazine has been filled with art, editorials and reviews from vegans around the world. As always, T.O.F.U. aims to work more as a platform than a soapbox, showcasing the acts and experiences of those who believe in an alternative to the status quo.

We're dedicating to Vegan Kitchen Ukraine. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by year-end to assist these incredible volunteers, who have so far prepared and distributed 47,000+ free plant-based meals in 10 cities. Donate on FB or directly here: awfw.org/ukraine-relief

Vegan Kitchen Ukraine is a project of Ukrainian animal rights group Every Animal/Кожна Тварина. They recently reached out to us and wrote that despite being under attack by Russian missiles, they are increasing their meal distribution to citizens in need. So far they have been spending $4-5,000 per month. Now they will need an additional $2,000 per month in order to create and supply two meal distribution centers in the city of Dnipro, which is close to the frontlines where people urgently need assistance. They will be serving an additional 2,400 free meals per month in Dnipro alone.

We hope you'll consider helping us support these heroic volunteers with any amount you're able. You don't need to wait till to donate— feel free to give through the button on this post, or at https://awellfedworld.org/?form=FUNUZLEZRBK

As always, thank you so much for caring and for helping us spread the word.

Not gonna be sad over this one...

Vegetarians outnumber vegans by almost two million in the UK, but they’re in danger of being cancelled by a plant-based takeover of the nation’s menus.

Humans are not the only victims of war. 💔

This month, We Animals Media contributors Andrew Skowron, Miloš Bičanski and Thomas Machowicz are on the ground in Poland and Ukraine to document the stories of humans and animals seeking refuge from the Russian invasion.

"Last year, researchers at the London School of Economics concluded from a review of 300 scientific studies that octopus were sentient beings capable of experiencing distress and happiness, and that high-welfare farming would be impossible."

Spurred on by soaring demand for seafood, a Spanish company plans to open the first commercial octopus farm next year but as scientists discover more about the enigmatic animals some warn it could be an ethical and environmental disaster.

Here is why we should stop judging the food choices that other vegans make.

1. Not everyone has the resources (money, time, food access, functional kitchen, energy) to prepare meals from scratch. Referring to the processed food they feed their family as “junk” is never helpful and always disrespectful.

2. Food shaming can be ableist. Disability activists have noted the crucial role that processed foods and fast foods can play in the role of people for whom cooking may be physically difficult, exhausting, and/or time-consuming.

3. Processed foods are sometimes more helpful than harmful. For example, fortified refined grains can be beneficial for vegans who struggle to maintain a healthy iron status or for children who aren’t getting enough calories.

4. Food shaming can promote an unhealthy relationship with food. Suggesting that a healthy vegan diet can’t include processed foods or treats may promote fear and anxiety around eating.

5. Food shaming creates barriers to going and staying vegan. Potential vegans who choose to eat processed foods for whatever reason may not want to be part of a community that makes them feel guilty about those choices.

“Over and over again, she and others are finding evidence not just for a relatively simple, ubiquitous sense of numerosity in animals, but also for a growing inventory of much more abstract and complex forms of numerical cognition.”

Crows recently demonstrated an understanding of the concept of zero. It’s only the latest evidence of animals’ talents for numerical abstraction.

"Lest we confuse Rastas with idyllic hippielike figures forsaking the modern world, the Rastafari movement has clear political aims. While the movement’s early leaders advocated for repatriation to Ethiopia, its contemporary focus is liberation for Afro-Caribbeans and all Black people: a means to resist the poor-quality food imported from Western nations and to reconnect the formerly enslaved with a lineage of eating in sync with the Earth."

While eating a plant-based diet is often presented as a White, millennial fad that accompanies gentrification, Black people have a long and rich tradition of plant-based eating.

The T.O.F.U. Story
