What a magical night! ✨We were honoured to attend the CHBA Edmonton Region Awards of Excellence Gala to support our client, Contact Renovations who were nominated for three awards including Best Social Media Campaign for The Art of Renovation! They were up against some heavy hitters who ultimately took home the hardware but it was a super night and we feel confident there are more nominations coming for this excellent home renovation company.

Without getting too deep into the science of the brain, one thing to know is that your mind is programmed to protect you. It tries to avoid negative situations as a form of self-preservation. When you're trying to set big goals, your brain might tell you that your goal is unattainable, or that an idea is destined to fail, so why even try? Why set yourself up for failure and pain by setting such a lofty goal?

Well, the next time you find yourself at this goal-setting roadblock, ask yourself: What do I have to lose?

If you really dig into this question, it's fairly evident that the consequence of writing down a goal, no matter how big or lofty, is not going to result in death. Sometimes you just need to take a minute to remind yourself that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain when you set a goal.

When we feel exposed and vulnerable, our little lizard brain, our amygdala screams "don't do it!" The ancient part of our brain does not see this as holding us back, but as protecting us from the dangers of life. It's very practical when you're avoiding being eaten by a lion - not so much in this day and age.

So today, I'm sharing the strategy I use to shush the part of my brain that holds me back, and focus on what is actually important, which in this case is setting and achieving smaller goals to help move closer to my capital-B Big Goal.

My secret is this: Do it anyway. One tiny step at a time, as much as you can possibly muster at the moment. How does one go about doing it anyway, you ask? Here are a couple of options:
