Queen Elizabeth II’s death at the age of 96 has been announced; Charles III is the new King and Sovereign of Canada. Here’s what it means for us:

- Official Mourning Period: Flags will be flown at half-mast on federal buildings and Canadians have been signing an online condolences book.

- Passports: First pages have the inscription “...in the name of Her Majesty the Queen…”.

- Currency: All coins and the $20 bill have a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
National anthem: “God Save the Queen” will become “God Save the King”.

- New holiday: There may be a new holiday to mourn her passing.

- Citizenship oath: New Canadians will now swear allegiance to King Charles III instead of “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada”.

On Tuesday, Justin Trudeau announced $2 billion worth of spending towards a previously-announced plan to double homebuilding over the next decade (CBC, Financial Post). The plan is to create 17,000 new homes across the country, including rapid housing for the homeless and at-risk, and affordable and market-rate housing projects. $200 million of that $2 billion fund will be used for a new rent-to-own program managed by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp (CMHC) to encourage developers and builders to support first-time homebuyers overwhelmed by down payment requirements. Rent-to-own deals vary, but essentially it would be a lease with an option to purchase - in one case reported by CBC, a buyer put down $10K and pays $1,000 for rent every month for two years. At the end of the two years they would have had the time to save for a conventional mortgage at the previously agreed upon price. If they are able to meet the conditions, their previous rent payments would contribute towards their mortgage. But if they back out of the deal or have not saved enough for the mortgage, they lose out on their initial down payment and rent. Although some neighbourhoods have seen success with this type of program in the U.K., it has not been as successful in other areas due to the wide gap between low wages and home prices. Paula Higgins, the chief executive of the HomeOwners Alliance in London said “I would be very wary of creating a system that’s developer-led - it helps them and not the renters” (CBC).

Alberta Minister of Justice Tyler Shandro has unveiled the United Conservative Party’s latest provincial police blueprint and explained how the new service would help address staffing shortages in communities currently served by the RCMP. Shandro said “the RCMP’s mandate is stretched too thin”. Dozens of rural Alberta municipalities are speaking out against the plan. Mayor Byrne Cook of Magrath, Alberta said “The primary concern we have is the increase in cost.” Cook also says “I’m sure there’s places in Alberta that could use 10 officers in their detachment, and they could use more help, but to go through and just have these blanket statements and change everything, and then to download the cost onto the smaller communities; that's not very fair”.

On Tuesday, the provincial government of Saskatchewan announced a four-point affordability plan to help address the rising cost of living (Global News). The plan includes the following (Saskatchewan Government):

1) All Saskatchewan residents who have filed their 2021 tax return will receive a $500 Saskatchewan Affordability Tax Credit cheque this fall.

2)Removal of Provincial Sales Tax (PST) for select recreational and fitness activities (e.g., gym memberships, classes), sporting events and recreational events, and businesses that qualify as small suppliers.

3) Extension of small business tax reduction to 0% retroactively from July 1, 2022, and delaying restoration of 2% rate until July 1, 2024.

4) The province will be paying off $1 billion in provincial government operating debt - Saskatchewan's projected surplus provided the opportunity to pay off more provincial debt than previously anticipated.

There is a critical staffing crisis of nurses that has led to temporary closures or adjusted hours of departments, including emergency rooms, of six hospitals across Ontario this past week. Patients are being redirected to other hospitals in the province instead. Ontario Nurses' Association reported that more than 20 Ontario hospitals will see closures due to staff shortages.

So it’s Asian-American Pacific-Islander Heritage Month. Not sure where this month really came from, or why there is a month dedicated to non-monolithic groups from a region with hundreds of different languages and unique cultures. But that being said, it is a good excuse to celebrate and share a retrospective on some of the amazing guests we have had on our show. As AAPI month is coming to an end, we wanted to share a couple clips from our podcast so far. Extremely humbling to speak with so many amazing people despite the infancy of our podcast, and we are grateful to have the means and resources to keep making more. Thanks for your support in following our instagram page, subscribing to our podcast, or sharing it with your friends.
